DIY: Basic Speaker Upgrade- 2nd Gen Access Cab

Nothing wrong with running an extra tweeter up high. The lower door locations won't give you the sound you want near ear level without some sort of processing regardless if they have a tweeter built in. An additional tweeter up top helps with that.


I highly recommend an amplifier. The impedance on the Kappas are a theoretical 4 ohm "nominal" (changes with frequency of course). The tweeters are 4 ohm. Not what they're rated at but pay attention to they're compensating for stock wiring raising impedance. How accurate? Who knows, but combined will be 2 ohm that may or may not exceed the limits of the deck's internal amp. Getting at least a small 2 channel amp will help clear up that issue while using stock wiring (2 ohm theoretic load).


Another issue is the wiring of an inline tweeter will inhibit balancing of the tweeter from the larger driver. Those tweeters only have a capacitor with no level adjustment. The 6x9 coax tweeter does, but you still will want some sort of way to balance the upper tweeter or it may turn out to be too "bright" from lack of attenuation. For this I suggest at least a small 4 channel amp and separate speaker wiring. This will allow you to "gain down" the upper tweets to a more balanced level since the stock deck lacks any real EQ functions.

Only other option is to return or sell the sets if possible, then start from scratch with a good component set that will eliminate all issues together with or without an amp.

 

I did Memphis Car Audio 3 1/2" 15PRX32 coaxial speakers in the stock tweeter locations with 400Hz Bass blockers and Memphis 6X9" 15PRX693 three way coaxial speakers in the stock locations. Ran new wires to a Memphis Car Audio 16SA450 4 Channel 50Watt RMS X 4 Ampllifier being run by a Pioneer MVH-X560BT through a Memphis Car Audio 16EQG7 Equalizer. I left the stock rear speakers for about a day before changing them out with Memphis Car Audio 6 1/2" 15PRX620 two way oversized coaxial speakers run by the head unit. I am very pleased with this set up.

I was able to install the back door 6.5's (Infinity Kappa 62.11i) with Metra speaker mounts, no issues. Everything was plug and play. For the replacement tweeters (Infinity Reference 075TX), I ended up making my own brackets out of reinforced stainless steel. I think they turned out really nice looking and are solid, no wiggle.

For the front door 6x9's (Infinity Kappa 693.11I), I can't get the 4 speaker holes to align with the Metra 6x9 bracket, only two holes line up?! Anyone else come across a similiar issue?

these brackets from Amazon and they worked well for front doors. They did not have pre-cut holes, so I was able to mark my own.

Have non JBL factory HU. Just wanted to upgrade factory junk speakers for more bass and clarity . Went with the Sound Ordnance P-67c 6.75" components from Crutchfield http://www.crutchfield.com/p_777P67C/Sound-Ordnance-P-67C.html?tp=106 install was easy using vids from *********. Ran factory wires into supplied crossover then to tweets and woofs. Mounted crossover inside door panel below arm rest. Be sure to put some foam or weather strip between woofer and metal of doors to eliminate vibration . Traced the factory tweet onto a 1/8" piece of plastic , cut out a hole for the tweet and screws and mounted right to factory mount. Fabbed mount will be visible in tweet grilles , so paint it black for a clean look. Turned fader 6 of 7 to the front. Very happy with the sound and clarity of these speakers , and they were only $50. Thanks for all the great info in this forum , made the upgrade simple .

 

Just want to thank everyone that has contributed to this thread. There's lots of great information here. My story. I bought a used 2006 access cab a few years ago. It came with a decent JVC double din head unit, and the crappy factory speakers. I finally got around to changing them just yesterday. I used Rockford Fosgate Punch series

Sooo, I know a little bit about speakers but not enough about Tacomas to make a "sound" decision about which speakers to buy. I have a 2013 xsp and I want to put 6x9s in the front and 6.5s in the back. I also want to replace the tweeters that at up higher in the door. Please throw some recommendations my way so I know what to start this build with. I eventually want to get a kicker hideaway for some extra beef.

 

why did you need speaker mounting parts? can't you use the stock mounting stuff?

Front door speakers
The Tacoma's front door houses a 6"x9" speaker molded to a mounting bracket, so an aftermarket 6"x9" speaker will not fit unless you build a new mounting bracket.

if I have only the stock front speakers and tweets can i add the rear speakers to my Acess doors.....they dont have the door panels that have the speaker openings....do i order the panels and the speaker harness from Toyota? or is there an aftermarket place that has them?

 

I am with Reddwarf on this question. I am in the same boat with no door panel speaker holes in the back "suicide" style access door. I am going to get in there and take a look and reserach on line but I believe:
1. The stock harness and connectors routed to that location for the rear speakers option from the factory.
2. There is an orifice in the sheetmetal door structure for the rear speakers option from the factory.
3. I could purchase a genuine toyota part that pops into the access cab back door. (I am also thinking about drilling some holes in the door panel at the speaker location if this is not the case.)

The reason I am planning to investigate is I am going to add sound deadening material before I get all the speakers and amps installed so I can get some answers about the unknowns in this build. I had a great system in my last ride and I want a repeat of that experience.

 

I got into it last week and installed some roadkill sound deadener. The access cab doors do have stock speaker locations within the metal door frame but the door panel has no opening for sound to come out. There is no pre-existing factory harness for speakers in the back seat either. Looks like a junkyard may be the best bet to get the door panel with the opening for a speaker. Then run speaker lines to an amp. I'm over it. I'll just get some baller ass 6x9s and tweets and run them both directly off a four channel amp bridged and then ran through crossovers. Duh, that was obvious. (Back to the drawing board)

great write up, for the rear it gives a cutout diameter but its 5.1-5.9 and I'm looking at similar 6.5" speakers, what one do i go with?

 

Hi, guys. I read the thread, and I ended up being more confused than before. Look, I have a 2015 base access cab that comes with front speakers only. I have several questions about sound improvements taking into account I am kipping the stock head unit, I'm adding an LC2i and I'm not adding an amplifier:

1. Is there a way I can add speakers on my access doors. The door panel doesn't have the mesh for the sound to go through, so maybe I can find one that does? If so, please let me know.

2. My budget for front speakers is $60, so I'd like to know who has had a nice experience with speakers in that budget with nice base and highs. I don't care about the brand.

3. What about the ceiling speakers that barely produce sound? When I switch sound to rear speakers only, those are the only ones that work. Do you think these speakers will do well with full sound converted from the LC2i?

4. I know some will say that I need to add an amp, so if that's the case, where can I get a good deal that includes 6x9's and amp together?

Thanks in advance. I know very little about sound systems, unfortunately. I can install water heaters, HVAC units, flooring, and many more things but I know nothing about car sound systems.

A few people recommended that I reach out to this thread for speaker questions.
First, I have an 08 access cab and I want to put a 6 1/2 speaker in the rear, but the one I want crutchfield says won't fit. Would it fit with a ********* or Amazonbracket?
Second, are the speaker cut outs in the rear doors the same in the double cab and access cab?

Also, I see everybody talking about Ohms and what not, should I be worried about that? I'm getting JBL speakers, front, rear and tweets, should I get compenant speakers, or would I be fine with regular speakers, I have an aftermarket Kenwood Headunit
