does anyone have a sound like when cruising anywhere from 50-70mph like alternating higher tone then lower tone sound? It sort of sounds like the engine...not sure. I have about 22K miles....never noticed before. started doing it about 6 weeks ago.

There are videos in this thread of the noise or just go on YouTube and search 2016 Tacoma differential howling or something like that.

Because, even though the group is called Toyota Customer Service, we the people are not at all talking to a customer service group. We are talking to claims adjusters. Note: claims adjusters don't care about fixing problems, as it is not their job, but rather they care about closing cases. The cases close on an individual basis. If they can press you into believing the issue is a normal, or characteristic condition, then perhaps they can close the case for less liability to Toyota. Some will not accept this, and the will press for compensation. These likely get service agreements. That is why the inconsistency exists.

Rest assured:Toyota knows exactly what is wrong. They have outstanding engineers. I am sure if it. They just do not want to admit there is something wrong, and they never will unless they are backed into a corner. The unintended acceleration issue was an example. This cost them money. They tried to blame it on a floor mat. This is a red herring. Toyoda, himself, later admitted to deceiving the American population. He was forced.

Mine was Alex. He was a blatant liar and a very arrogant Dick type. I had him "coached" later by upper management.

    Good luck!

My second diff suck more ass than my first.

But there are people who claim to have the issue solved after a new diff.

I already have the regional Toyota engineer lined up to come in when I bring my truck back into the dealer.

I'm willing to get my first diff back or another new one. My current one is terrible.

I made a recording of the noise on my way home from work but can't figure out how to post it.

Does it do this all the time or only in crosswinds?

Please post it somewhere and share a link (maybe YouTube??). Tell me the speed you were driving, the exact truck you have, and if your tires are stock. I can analyze the sound and most likely tell you exactly what the source of the sound is.

My 17 has a constant "howl" at much lower speeds (25-35mph). After I pass 35mph it subsides. Think it's possible that it's the same issue as everyone else?

Sure. First diff was a bad pinion bearing according to the master tech at the dealer. Took about 2k miles before it got loud. Could hear it from about 50mph it peaked at about 54mph and faded to 60 mph. Toyota okayd a replacement.

They put the second diff in and it was way worse from day one. Starts at 50 mph peaks at 55 and again at 60mph and fades to about 65 mph.

It's not as loud in the morning as it is in the afternoon, when I drive home, for some reason.

I'm on my iPhone right now but I'll try to convert the audio file to something useful hopefully tomorrow.

Why keep using this same diff if they know what's wrong with it?

Toyota should recall all gen 3 rear ends and replace with a totally different gear system instead of not admitting there and problem and stringing everybody along and hopping your warranty will run out and then it's on you or most people will ignore it until it goes out Toyota needs to fess up and resolve this issue

Agreed. If everyone on here would organize and contact the NHTSA and Toyota it would happen. I vote the 4.30 gearset in the auto

Because they can replace it and then claim it's normal if it still makes the noise. I imagine they bull order parts and it would cost them so much it's absurd so they will continue with the rear chunks setup poorly

I bet if someone like a reputable 4x4 shop.setup the gears it would be quiet. They just slap in bad center sections that are improperly setup

How did you reach someone above them. He claimed that he was the end of the road even after 30 minutes of me telling him not acceptable and asking to talk to an engineer. I want an engineer to tell me why it makes this.noise.
