I have 30,000 miles I want to put a 3" lift but I'm worried about messing something up. Or messing the way it rides or steers

Maybe. It really depends on how you are modifying the suspension.

Go with something other than a junk spacer lift, and quality Upper Control Arms and you will be good to go. At a minimum go with Bilstein 5100's

Head over to the suspension forum here and read the FAQ thread pinned at the top.

Then I suggest you look around in the Suspension section and research research research.

Plenty mods on many vehicles since 1982. Current: 15 Tacoma 4X4 V6 TRD OR Access Cab Pyrite Mica- Icon full stage 7, All-Pro APEX sliders & rear Expedition Springs + custom Tampa Springs leaf spring upgrades, Timbren bump stops, u-bolt flip, Road Armor front stealth winch bumper & rear steel, Warn Vr 8000, Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75/r16, Off Grid Engineering Dual Battery system, SPod 6 switch, 2 pairs Rigid D2 spot & flood in bumper, ARE Expedition Cap, bedglide,Tru Cool 45K GVW add on transmission cooler, Re-gear to 4.56, rigid rear bumper floods, scan guage II, rigid ditch lights. full size spare on matching factory wheel, seat mods/insert, CB w/magnet mount.
I suggest Icon stage 4 or higher and All Pro springs. Expedition series springs if you're towing or will have a heavier load. There are a lot of great options at various price points. Depends on what you want to spend really.

My truck rides better than stock, in All road and terrain conditions.

I've got the stage 7 with tubular UCA's. 700# coils and All Proexpedition springs. There are MANY great posts with fantastic info in the suspension threads posts as suggested by Unchained and Sticky Taco. Looking over as many posts as possible in all the 2nd gen forums dealing with suspension, lifts and tires is how I chose my set up. Here's a poor pic of my truck as it is now.

Good affordable lift go with OME nitrocharger shocks with 887 coils, SPC upper control arms, and maybe AAL in the rear or full dakar pack depending on how much you feel like spending.

Research it all, I've been researching for 3 months still figuring out what I want to do

Bumper, Winch, 315s, Sliders, OME HD lift, Custom rear swingout, roof rack, drawers, way too much to list.
OME or a 5100 setup is going to maintain ride quality pretty well but not completely break the bank. I've got about $1000 into my suspension right now, but I did buy super cheap UCAs.

I went with Fox 2.5s with resis, clickers and dakars in the back... and boy it rides like butter (for a truck), it almost feels even smoother on dirt than tarmac! The only time I notice the higher spring rate in the front are harsh cracks in the road become more noticeable than with the stock suspension. But woops, dips and bumps are soaked up like nothing. But in Foxes defense I have the coils pretty cranked down.
