Walking up to my truck the other day I noticed some rust on the frame. All the rust was minor and concentrated on only the welds of the frame... I'm from New England, I expect some rust eventually. But the amount of rust I am starting to see is becoming alarming to me. I am looking into getting an undercoat job done. Anyone else noticing the rust? Never thought I would be looking to get a new vehicle undercoated after a year and a half. Also I take care of my truck, wash it all the time especially in the winter.

Undercoating should be done as soon as you buy the vehicle, to prevent rust in the first place, similar to sunscreen. You don't put sunscreen on after you're already burned.

    Wow, talk about coincidence.

Today I found a tiny spot of surface rust above the driver-side door handle about the size of a 10pt font period. My head almost split open in anger but since we now have a rusty Tacoma thread I'll just add my tale of agony here.

    Two questions,

    1. Will my truck break in half if I put it on the lift for the 20k maintenance visit?
    2. Should I get a desperate strip mall lawyer to take my case and sue the bejesus out of Toyota.?

@smitty99 are you reading this???? My truck is now a shitbox like yours.

If you already have a lawyer, I'd make them do it.

Good idea, if I have him on retainer he's not going to just sit on his ass waiting for stuff to happen.

China has a very well-deserved reputation for producing inferior and often dangerous products. Such products are as diverse as lead-filled toys, sulfurous drywall, pet food and baby formula spiked with melamine and inferior steel contaminated with impurities and fillers.

We’re talking about a huge difference in quality between American and cheap Chinese steel mostly used by the big auto manufacturers. As things become progressively worse in the race to the bottom to squeeze every last nickel out of the U.S. "Consumer" durable goods manufacturing quality will continue to decline.

Clean it up with sandpaper or rust reformer, paint over any areas needing paint and a couple days later, fluid film the entire underside. Reapply twice yearly or as needed. It will help keep rust at bay.

I undercoated mine a month after I got it, a few months before winter hit. I live in the rust belt and we had a very mild winter this year. Areas I couldn't spray, leafs, suspension components, ect, look like crap. My f150 after 3 winters didn't look this bad and I didn't undercoat it at all. My guess is these are going to be plagued with rot problems just like the previous generations. as long as I'm living in the rust belt, this is probably going to be my last Toyota truck

You can definitely protect those areas with some fluid film. Spray that on anything and everything.

I live in NH and our road guys and state guys do a awesome job with our roads! This does mean a fair amount of salt, sand, scraping etc... I wanted too under coat mine, but never got around to it. The good news, no rust yet :broccoli:! My Dad's 2011 Tunda has some rust and has been undercoated
