I have a set of 2nd Gen 5100's on my 16. They were advertised as 3rd Gen until the 3rd Gen came out if that makes sense. so yes my truck is proof they fit and they're work great. Very little difference between 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen really just the 2 and 3...

I'm running 2nd gen 5100s and 885 coils, no issues at all with fitment and a very nice ride.

Yes, which is disappointing TBH. I would rather have more travel than a "newer shock" per say.

Looks like the 3rd Gen topout at 2" and 2nd Gen at 2.5" looks like the 2nd Gen is tha way to go if you want more sightseeing ability....

Yep, that's why I run my 2nd gens at 0 and let the springs do the lifting, best of both for a very nice ride.

The dampening is also different because they re-valve the shock for a different wight and spring constant.

    Yeah that's reference lift.

So the second gen can be lifted 2.5" from stock. But the 3rd gen can be lifted 2" from stock. But since the 3rd gen truck is one inch taller compared to the second gen, you basically get a 3" lift in reference to the second gen.

That may be so but according to the link from Headstrong it's not really a noticeable difference.

My 2nd gen 5100s feel identical to my OEM 3rd gen Bilsteins and from what I read the OEM Bisteins are valved the same as the 3rd gen 5100s.

I'd bet the average person would not be able to distinguish 2nd from 3rd gen in ride.

I have them in my 16. Work fine. From what I read you can't set the 2nd gen set to full height. So I am set at the 1.75 on stock coils.

Agreed. I bought my 5100's from HeadStrong. HeadStrong advertised the 2nd Gen 5100's as 3rd Gen before the 3rd Gen 5100's came out > Then HeadStrong advertised the 3rd Gen 5100's as new, when the modifications were made. I asked them about this. They said the difference is meaningless...and wouldn't be noticed in a comparison drive.

The OEM Bilsteins are not 2", the 5100s are 2" in diameter. They are a completely different shock.

Albeit, at the end of the day, the differences in ride comfort won't be more than barely noticeable.

In my opinion thought, in terms of quality build, the 5100s are way better built.

I wouldn't say way better shocks, just more adaptable with preloading the spring or used in a lifted application. As far as dampening, I'd say they're about the same.

Agree to disagree if you need to.

So I am going to go get the 887/5100 fronts tomorrow, next question. What is my best option for the rear? AAL? extended travel 5100's? Thanks in advance!

Recommend a progressive 3 leaf AAL; Headstrong, ICON and Wheelers all offer them and they appear to be of the same quality and construction, difference only being price.

My truck with 885 coils, 5100s and Wheelers progressive AAL with the overload leaf left in, still retains the factory rake with a 2 inch lift overall front and back. 887 up front would probably make you level.

I'm running the regular 5100s in the rear but I also have a LB and 100lbs of stuff in the toolbox too.

Or you can go with a full leaf replacement pack like Dakars.

Okay, I have another question. My buddy told me that with the 887 springs and the 5100's set at ZERO that i would not gain any lift over stock, so i took them to the local shop and had them adjust them to the highest slot. Hoping that this was the right move!

887's provide 2" lift from standard coils with stock weight. I would advise not putting them on the highest setting ever. These are 16+ coils were talking about here, not 05-15.
