So I picked up this WW2 Japanese sniper rifle

    I do know its an
Arisaka type30 "hook safety" But I'm still not 100% on the caliber. I think it's 6.5mm
And I am also trying to find the MFG date.
Anyone here read Japanese or know anything about this?

They were produced from 1899-1906 and 550,000 were manufactured. By the serial number my guess it would be towards the last few years of production

Hey, I have one of those complete with bayonet! Well, except mine is a type 99. Unfortunately, mine was made in later in the war and has half of the emperor's mark ground off.

This might be helpful to you when it comes to finding an estimate on the MFG year.

Looks like someone tried to make it into a sporter at one time.
Bent bolt handle (Type-30 had mostly straight bolt handles), D&T holes in receiver for some type of scope, and cut down stock sans bayo lug and barrel bands.
Too bad, full Mum on receiver.

Just had it translated at work by j-staff coworkers. It says "30 year model". Made in 1930? I can read the first two characters. The three horizontal stacked bars are the #3 and the + symbol is #10.

Well its a type 30 they didnt make this model after 1904 I belive.

    There is type 30 -35-38-99

Ive been looking on line to see if I can get a date based on the S/N.

I'm guessing between 1890-1904. It would be nice to know exactly what year it was made,

If you decide to shoot it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a gunsmith check the headspace.
I don't know if Arisakas are serial number matched like other military rifles and if that is the original bolt.
Cheap insurance to have it checked with a go/no go gauge.

    Looking at everything
the bolt has the same S/N on it as the other parts of the rifle. Everything looks good and moves smooth the bolt locks just fine with no play.

If I do shoot it I will make a vid of it .

I have a nice sporterized Type 38.( with mum, but restocked and scoped, also reblued in the '50s. worth nothing really) Sweet shooting but the Swedish mauser is really even better built if you grow to like that caliber. Ammo is expensive unless you reload. Shoots better when you do though.

edit: by better built, i mean ergos. Nothing wrong with these guns about coming apart, it just doesn't feel as well in my hands nor shoot as well as a Swedish.
I really wish I had bought one of those back when. Best small caliber rifle I've ever shot. Better than 25-06 imo.

The two holes are stock. The bolt was bent for a scope but not drilled like mine is. I dunno if the PO ever got around to mounting one. Lots of people just bent them in the garage back then. My dad did.
BTW, it seems like every Jap rifle seems to described as a 'sniper' rifle. My Pops said it was because of their habit of hiding in coconut trees over the beach, not their rifles so much. Mines a carbine and people still call it that.
