2017 Still Vibrating

I'm on 265/75/16s KO2s and mine does this. Have had them road force balanced twice and it still does it. I've given up trying to make it perfect. It rides really well short of that so I can live with it. In my experience if there's a good bit of weight (a person) in the seat the vibrations are muted significantly. It's almost like when there's nothing in the seat it amplifies the vibrations.

 

My guess is the resonant frequency of the frame is pretty low, due to its flexible nature. Couple that with a lot of mass (a heavy truck), and you have a vibration factory, on the part that holds your cab, at the right frequencies. It would be nice to know the resonant frequency of the truck's frame and the rpm of the tires when the vibrations are the strongest.

 

Seems like its very light at 70 and gets worse up to 80.
I don't really drive faster than 80 and I can't feel it as much under 70.

I never once noticed the vibrations when I had 265's for the past 3 months so I'm pretty positive it has to do with my new tires.

Same, my seat doesn't vibrate as much but when I look over to my empty passenger seat, it rocks back and forth.

I will try to get them re balanced later this week and report back.
If its out of round can the shop indentify this and get me a new tire?

I took my friend to a dealer to test drive a 2017 TRD Sport 6MT on Saturday and the steering wheel was shaking at highway speeds.

I pointed it out to the salesman. Hopefully he gets it addressed before the truck sells to someone.

If your truck does not vibrate, you may have an uncommon one!

 

This is kind of what I've chalked it up to. Maybe just a characteristic of the truck that is amplified by non-perfect tires. I don't recall it doing it with the oem tire/wheel setup but then again I rarely ever hit 78+ that early on which is the only time it does it for me. Furthermore the acceptable limits for an LT tire are much higher than the P-metric tire that comes stock and in general LTs are much worse.

So, I think it's a little of both in the end but I've decided I can live with it. Cruising at 75 works for me, especially in the truck and I can always go back to my stock wheels/tires if I get tired of it. I have kept them for this very reason.

 

If they have a GSP9700 and it shows them having over 39lbs of loaded radial run out then yeah, whoever sold you the tires should either replace them or at the very least accept them as a return. The first shop I got my KO2s from gave me two that had over 40lbs. They had no interest in replacing them but they did agree to take them back for a full refund, labor included.

 

I thought I had the problem solved but I had to drive to the city recently and the vibrations re occurred. It's smooth to about 55mph and gets progressively worse and really bad around 70 to 75. It seems like more of a hop now than wheel shimmy. Driving any more than a couple of hours this way and I think I'd turn into the guard rail eventually.

I can drive the same road 10 times and get 9 different experiences of body, wheel shake and bounce.

I have battled this now for 6 months to no avail.

It's back in tomorrow where I bought the tires to check for roundness, tread wear etc. And probably another balance. The tires have 5,000 miles (cooper) and the rims(fuel)2,000. Vibration was there prior to new wheels. 6 balances to date by 3 different shops.

but the truck looks great....

And I can't claim any warranty with the mods if I needed to.....

I have the exact same problem, going on for a long time now. As advised by my service writer and service manage, I should have it checked out at my 5000 check up, as it was livable at the time. Finally I went in for my 5000, and after mentioning it to them many times prior it was to be finally addressed. I have been back to the dealer over 6 times since to try and resolve this so far...

Shaking steering wheel at low 60s and low 70s. Shaking vibration gets worse the faster I go. At highway speeds the steering wheel is not solid, steady and still. It shakes or at least vibrates. Past experience of mine screams tire balance. I feel the same shaking in my legs as well as the steering wheel.

First thing they did (as I insisted) they roadforce balanced all 4 tires and found one would not balance. They replaced it. Also lowered the tires pressure from 37 (factory set) to 29 (said on the door frame). I didn't even get down the road and it felt like I was dragging rubber mats. Heavy, dragging, shaking. That night. my low tire light went on. (come on Toyota!) I immediately took it back and they put the pressure back to 37. The ride was back where it was, no change, the bad tire (and replaced) was not the issue.

Next time I took the truck in and a mechanic test drove it said it was a normal engine noise at 2000 RPMs. Claimed it was normal and I would have to live with it. That is what I was feeling.

Next time I brought it back the service manager drove it and said it was normal road noise and he felt no issue. Again, it seemed to be my problem.

Next time I went back the service manager set up an appointment for his road force rep from Hunter to come in and check their machine and also very carefully RF balance my tires again. They found another tire that was within specs, but not as true as the other three, so they replaced now the second tire. Drove it, no change. The RF rep said that the tires were perfectly balanced...it was not tires that I was feeling. I was given back the truck, and found no change. Not fixed.

Meanwhile no one at Toyota said they felt the shaking, but they are still working with me. Sometimes I ride on the freeway for 30 minutes and get home with numb hands. This is obnoxious for a brand new truck of this quality.

Next step, the midwest Toyota rep is coming to my dealership next week to look at my truck. They have given me permission to ride with him, and believe me he is not getting out of truck until 1) He feels the problem and 2) acknowledges that this IS a problem, and 3) finds a way to FIX IT!

There is definitely something wrong! I have a feeling this is going be a real pain to get fixed.

Observations:

The RPM's have nothing to do with it. I drove in 4th, 5th and 6th gears at the shaking speeds and no change whatsoever on the shaking.

When I go around gradual curves on the freeway the shaking is the worst. I tried to video tape it but discovered my phone has an anti-shake feature and removed the shaking (go figure).

In careful observation the shaking is worst "free-wheeling" (giving it no gas, going down hill). It seems to be not as bad as I apply gas and give it torque.

Yes, as stated above, I had them RF balanced the first time and they found a bad tire, then RF balanced a second time with the Hunter rep, finding a possibly questionable tire. The issue did not change at all after each RF balancing, or either new tire. Same exact issue.

 

I took the 2 inch level off mine as I didn't want to resort having to put the ecgc bushing in for warranty reasons. I thought lowering would eliminate the vibration as all the research says lifting is what causes the vibe problem.
As it turns out the vibe still there and a bit smoother when running 4 wd. it is very inconsistent. I know it's not wheels and tires. I may have to get the bushing anyways. Taking it back to Toyota will be a fruitless effort as we know.

Smitty99 you seems to know about this problem. You just live with it?

 

The Chicago rep came and we went for a ride together. He said the truck felt normal to him and said he even had a new 4-runner that felt the same way. He wanted me to leave it for the day, where he said he would run through a series of tests that Toyota wanted him to do for his report. Later in the day the service manager called and said he thinks he found the issue. The tires were at 40psi and they lowered them to 30psi. They test drove it and said the drive was night and day. I had my truck in the previous week where the Hunter Road Force rep came in to check the balance. That is the last time anyone touched the air in those tires. They must have put the tires at 40psi...I sure didn't.

When I came in to the dealer to see the Chicago Toyota rep, I know for a fact my pressure gauge on the dash read that the tires were all at 32psi. I know for sure, because I had been watching this, trying to watch any variance that I saw to help diagnose the problem. Was something also wrong with the digital reading as well? Now the dash gauge and the actual tires are both at 30psi.

Meanwhile I took the truck and drove it that day after they lowered the pressure and it drove fine! I hoped after 6 times at the dealer, it was fixed. The next day I felt a little shaking and the third day, yesterday, the shaking was awful. At almost all speeds the steering wheel was shaking as bad as ever and there was a constant deep vibration in my legs, seat and wheel. I actually was on the same road each time that I had been three days ago, when the the truck was fine. So it was not road surface, weather or speed. Anywhere after 55mph is where it starts shaking. I keep thinking it feels like I am driving on a piece of corrugated aluminum, creating that deep vibration.

So this issue goes from a slight vibration to very bad and almost dangerous to drive at different times.

Could it be something with the computer that is over compensating or adjusting to a part that is not right, shifting, loose, defective?

I need to mention here that when the truck was a month old, I was driving in the rain at 60mph and the front end and steering wheel started shaking so violently that I had to pull over. I thought a wheel was going to come off. Then I drove slowly home off the freeway and called the dealer and made an appointment. The next day the truck was driving fine so I decided to wait for my 5000mile check up to have them check for anything. We have had such a dry summer I haven't had a chance to drive in the rain since.

I am calling Toyota customer service in California today and demanding something be done. I cannot drive this new vehicle this way anymore!

Hi all, I have a 2017 double cable long bed that I purchased in Dec 2017. It is a TRD off road equipped truck. As most of my driving is local and just short trips any vibrations I felt I attributed to the stiffer suspension and feeling all toad imperfections. However, on Christmas Eve I drove approx 150 miles to visit family and the majority of the drive was on Interstate highways. Both going and coming I began to feel vibrations, at first in the floorboard, then in my seat, and then through my elbow that was resting on the door armrest.
I called the dealer and brought it in to be looked at and their service manager said he test drove it but couldn’t feel any vibration. He suggested that I bring it in the following week and leave it with them so he could have his master tech look a it. I brought it in on Jan 2nd and went for a test drive with their master tech and he said he felt the vibration I was talking about. They gave me a loaner and the tech said he would take care of it. BTW I mentioned the TSB that addresses the vibration issues on the 2016’s that was amended in Oct 2017 to cover the 2017’s. I believe it is tsb 000171-16_rev. I was told that the tsb excludes Tacoma’s equipped with the off road packages, which in my mind shouldn’t matter.
Nonetheless, the dealer just called and they said that their master tech went over my truck and could find nothing wrong and that he also road tested three other similar trucks they had on their lot, and they all exhibit the same body vibration. They are concluding that the truck is working s it is supposed to work. I told them that from what they are telling me, there apparently is an inherent design flaw in these trucks and I guess the next step is to escalate the issue up to corporate.
I’m going tomorrow to pick up my truck. Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
The truck only had 1319 miles when I brought it in to the dealer.

 

Frustrating and agonizing with a new truck I know...... I received my East Coast Gear Supply bushing, removal tool and seal today and am going to have it installed. Warranty is not an option even with only 14,000 kms as I have different wheels and tires from factory.

Usually the vibrations start when drive angles are changed, but in some cases they're vibrating right from factory as in your case.
My next plan is to put more weight in the ass end......they're light and bounce. I can drive the same road 10 times and get 6 different experiences.

 

Is it possible to bend a cv axle say from sliding into a curb? Could this cause a vibration in the floor above 70mph also with a "woop woop woop" sound?

 

Today is the first that I've seen this thread. I have been dealing with this very issue for almost a year. The dealership where I purchased my 17 TRD offroad gave me the run around for a couple weeks. At that point I contacted Toyota Corp. and was told to have the tires checked at a Goodyear dealer because my dealer said it was the tires. I explained that if it was a bad tire then the vibration should change with each service as they were to be rotating the tires. The Goodyear dealer advised that nothing was wrong with the tires and was not their issue. I purchased new tires from a tire shop that guarantees tires for 30 days. They went through 3 sets of tires in 30 days and road forced all 3 sets. I still have the vibration and the Toyota dealer I am going to now is still telling me its the tires regardless of road force testing and them rebalancing. I took a tech for a test drive and he advised he felt the vibration prior to the 57 mph where I usually start to feel it in the drivers seat. Again was told its the tires and the tires I put on are "junk" per the service advisors.(General Grabber ATs 265/75/17s). I have another service appt coming up and giving them another chance to find an issue and then it'll be another call to Toyota Corp.
