I'm not sure what Toyota did supplier wise for the new generation but typically new generation anything, all components get evaluated and an attempt at cost reduction is done per part or assembly. It is common for the supplier (or a new bidder) to say "hey we can meet the same specs you have supplied but do it cheaper than the previous differential" or even "hey we can make it better than the previous one but at the same cost." Then if a specific noise level was never a direct requirement and especially if it isn't an obvious structural issue, who is responsible to fix it? For either party, the cost would be huge to do a redesign. It is in the supplier's best interest to change a nuisance issue (if they want to keep being the preferred supplier), but if sales aren't being affected and it isn't an issue in the spotlight all over the market, the push probably isn't as strong as we would like it to be.

If, as Toyota says, there is no structural damage risk (that is what they told me and closed my case on the 2nd differential howling), then the most I can see them doing is creating a band-aid fix to just make sure the driver can't actually hear the noise. And until sales are affected or a very large number of people start dumping their trucks specifically because of it, it may be a very slow process for a fix (if at all).

I got an 8 year 125k Platinum warranty for my troubles.

It's fucking worthless if they don't fix anything that's wrong with it. It's golden handcuffs.

I'm kind of mad at myself for falling for it--patiently waiting like a sucker for a fix that probably won't ever come."but I have a warranty for 8 years in case something breaks!" Pfft. I'm not putting up with this for 8 years. I'll eat a couple grand in stupid tax(stupid for thinking a new Tacoma was a good idea), but hopefully I'll get a better "beater" until the Ranger, Frontier, and Jeep come out.

Anyone that is reading this thread, that hasnt purchased a 3rd gen, steer fucking clear! It's not a truck that's worth the risk. You pay a premium for the Toyota badging, but you get 80s GM quality.

Edit: side note, I have a 2016 TRD off road for sale. Runs and drives great, super clean, functions, normally, as designed. $31k and you get the 8 year 125k Platinum warranty (it transfers once). A must buy for people that can't hear 380-450hz range.

It's an automatic. Don't worry, it's smooth as the engineers designed.

I miss my 2000 quad cab Dakota. No vibrations, no rear diff howling, and the 4.7 V8 hauled ass. It was 12 years before i got disgusted with it. Had a bad feeling about this tacoma on the second day.

I'm pretty sure we already know what the issue is. The rear is assembled incorrectly. The shim or crush sleeve on the drive side of the pinion gear does not have the correct clearance and thus we get this whine while feathering the throttle.

Everyone is giving their experience, so here.
I had mentioned earlier that I took my truck in to my Toyota dealership with the lower control arm noise and the rear end howl.
They mentioned two tsb's. One for the lugs in the lca's and the rear end noise they were going to replace a heat shield or something. I was happy to let them go through their procedures. After the replacement I asked them to let me test drive the truck before signing off. The noise was still there as expected. When I returned they were willing to help. They said the next step was for them to contact corporate and open a case. The service manager was not in that day but he would get on that when he got back.
    I wait for the outcome

I know no one wants to fork over the dough for it...
Why not get about 20-30 guys to throw in $30-$50? Lottery winner goes to a reputable gear shop.
