I know but I hate using that stuff. It's such a mess when you need to work on something. I usually don't keep any vehicle I own more than a few years so I'm not worried about it. I was planning on keeping this truck for several but now I think I'll end up dumping it it 2 years

    A few minor things...
    Oil undercoating.

NH oil undercoating is where I got my truck done. I was under my truck yesterday, 2016 with 28k miles zero frame, axle, shock, or control arm rust. Some nuts and bolts are a little tarnished (stuff that gets heated by the brakes a lot) but that's it.

I live just north of boston and commute in my truck 5 days a week.

Its like $125 a year and it keeps you rust free.

    3G is ridiculous.
To be upset your New England truck has some minor rust with no treatment is like being mad at physics.
Light winters mean nothhing, as any threat of cold and precipitation means the roads are treated, and that means corrosive splash to your undercarriage.

You should go back to Ford,
    Move out west
    Learn to fluid film
Or trade in every 2-3 years

That's against perforation from rust. Not against rust itself.

I believe the warranty cover "perforation" , holes all the way through.

Are you taking to OP or me?

Obviously anyone who lives in these parts knows the roads need to be salted. I wash my truck probably 100 times over the course of a winter. I don't expect the underside of my truck to look like a silver platter, however I take care of my vehicles like anything that I own. I work on vehicles for a living, so I know how bad the environment beats up vehicles in my area. I owned a first gen that I managed to keep in great shape for several years while most were being bought back by Toyota because of the frame rust issues. Two of my buddies had Tacomas and one was bought back shortly after he go it because the frame was destroyed. The seconds gens aren't fairing any better. Same problems and recall/extended customer service campaigns along with the Tundras. Now obviously most that needed replacement could of been prevented or Atleast held up longer with a bit of protection and TLC. Most people never clean the undercarriage of there vehicles or only do in spring once the nice weather hits. Obviously by that time the salt and brine has been eating away at everything for a few months. All I'm saying is for someone who routinely cleans the undercarriage of his vehicle in a very mild winters where they used less than half of the normal average of salt or perhaps even less, my Tacoma took a beating. Compare that to my f150 I had before this that I didn't treat the undercarriage and it went through 3 Western NY winters, it's showing the same trend of previous generations pasts. I've always been a Toyota supporter and have owned a few toyotas in the past 15 years. However if these frames have the same issues that they have had in the past, they are going to end up losing a lot of customers and have a bunch of pissed off ones.

    ^ This.

People hoped that after the 1st Gen frame rust issues that Toyota would have fixed the problem on the 2nd gens, unfortunately they didn't. I'm hoping that for the 3rd gens Toyota did fix the problem but I would not be surprised if they didn't.

    Time will tell.

I don't see how washing the undercarriage of your truck can prevent rust, it may help a bit, but I'm more confident with rust check/fluid film, etc preventing rust. I see spraying water under there forcing the salt into more areas and letting rust set in the crevices that you can't see until it's too late.
    But maybe that's just me.

Of course washing a lot won't. Rust is a chemical reaction. Oxidation, is going to happen regardless. The salt amplifies the process. So washing it helps a lot, especially on components that aren't covered in some type of preventative or something where an area of steel is exposed.

I've been using Salt-away for a number of years now. Unfortunately, I keep itching and trading away the vehicles I'm treating regularly. Oh well, one of these days I'll keep a car from new through for long enough to know if it's working :)

I agree, just think an oil based product would help better

I'm just waiting for a reason myself. If and when that day comes I'll never own another truck.

I'll probably always have a truck. I don't pull a trailer or anything but I do occasional hauling and stuff. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. That's why I went down from a full size back to a midsize. The prices of trucks keeps rising like crazy. I really wanted to keep this for several years and then try to recoup some of the investment or pass it off to my daughter when she starts driving. But I also want to plan a travel trip around the US in 4 years. I'm thinking if I still have the taco then I should get rid of it before that trip and get a full size to pull a travel trailer around the country. Time will tell I suppose but I'll be afraid to see how she looks after 3 more winters

I had my ram 1500 for 4 years and had it known rust proofed every fall. (It's like rust check or fluid film) I live in NS, Canada, surrounded by the ocean, freeze thaw cycles like no other, salted to death roads for a minimum of 5 months of the year and the undercarriage of that truck didn't have a spec of rust when I traded it in. I have always rust proofed my vehicles up here, they just don't last if you don't.
