Wireless charging upgrade, need info

Hello all,

This is my first post, been mostly a lurker since I purchased my truck in May, but noticed lately that nobody has come up with a solution to improve the wireless charger inside of the 3rd gen Tacoma's. I, myself, own a Samsung phone that supports fast charge so my intentions are to remove the factory wireless charger and install the official Samsung fast wireless charger in its place, but keep the flat pad in place, if possible, to look completely stock. I'm not too concerned about the LED's working, but I'm sure it's possible since the Samsung one has blue and green lights.

I would like to know any info on the amount of space available, the amount of heat that area would be exposed to when the truck is off as well as running so I know if this project is even worth tackling or if the Samsung charger will just quit working from the heat in a very short amount of time.

I have a 3D printer and high temp filament that I could use to create a bracket to allow it to fit but first I need some info before I go disassembling the interior of my truck. I would also release the 3D design for others on my thingiverse account for free for others to print and install themselves.

I also believe that I would need to fabricate some way of getting new wiring to the charger since it pulls more current than the stock one, maybe just installing a DC plug inside since there's a long cord but would allow it to be easily replaced.

I'm very open to ideas from those who know the inside and outside of this truck or if you just have an idea that I maybe hadn't thought of. I have a few schematics and diagrams from Toyota so hopefully any info given I can look at and verify. I plan on doing this in the near future so I look forward to the input from the users here.

Once complete I plan on giving a full, dummy-proof, and quick tutorial so that those with the same issues I have can have a wireless charger that's actually worth using.

The wireless charging is nearly useless. I had a Note 5 and it was extremely slow to charge, with or without a case on it.

Now I have the Galaxy S8+ and it ALWAYS overheats within about 20 minutes of the charging so I end up having to turn off the Qi charger or it will continuously beep at me and flashes orange and green.

Nice thought but much like the GoPro mount, a total gimmick, in my experience.

 

Same exact issue for myself with the S8+. The Samsung wireless charger has a fan that I plan on keeping installed, but don't know what the airflow is like. But yes, my Samsung overheats very quickly on the Toyota charger. This is another reason why I want to make the upgrade.

 

I also have the Samsung S8+ and it overheats on the wireless charger...freaking gimmicky...they should of put a vent down there from the a/c...

 

My S7 Edge overheats as well. Interested to see how this shakes out. Sub'd!

 

My Droid Turbo will slowly charge and get hot when on the pad without the Incipio case installed. With the case it doesn't want to charge.

 

my iPhone 6 Plus charges well, but sometimes it get warm to hot..use it everyday when in the truck.....I don't think I have any issues yet.......except of the red shit coming from my differential that they say they did nothing but torque bolts.....

 

The Samsung phones can be charged. They have to be turned off to prevent overheating.

 

My S7 does pretty well on the charger pad, sometimes it might get a little warm but thankfully never hot.

 

My S8+ works fine

 

It does charge, albeit slowly. However, if I leave the phone on the charger for any length of time, the phone overheats and the green/yellow lights on the charging pad start flashing. I wouldn't care so much about the LEDs flashing, but then my phone goes crazy - display says CHARGING... then NOT CHARGING...then CHARGING... then NOT CHARGING... The screen flashes like a Christmas tree and THAT gets very annoying very quickly. I am forced to then turn off the Qi charger. Maybe it's improper venting? The last few times it did this I was running the AC at 73 degrees. The cabin was cool, so that wasn't the problem. It's the charger.

 

I was thinking of more uses for the QI pad and ran across one of the QI charging tags. For anyone that doesnt know the QI tags can be used on devices that do not already have QI charging capabilities. Most of the tags are garbage and do not hold up well. Ive been buying Nillkin brand phone cases for years and have always thought their stuff was good quality and now they have a line of tags. Reviews are also pretty good on the tags.

My thinking is to buy the tag DONT stick it on anything that way you could use it as the middle man between the QI pad and multiple USB devices. My first thought was to use on my phone but then I started thinking about anything that has USB charging...like a USB flashlight. Most 18650 batteries recommend a 1A charger so it should work for that.

iPhone6s with wireless case charger also overheats, its my sunglasses holder now.

 

My Nexus 5 charged just fine on the Tacoma charging pad. I had to buy a QI charging tag for my ZTE Axon 7, and it also charges just fine, even through the PU leather wallet case on the Axon.

 

Well at least you get an extra switch blank area if you remove the wireless charge button right?

That's probably what I would do if I had it.

 

I have a S8+ as a well, and mine has only flashed at me overheating once when the battery was charging at a low percentage. Otherwise, like 60-80% battery or higher it never overheats for me.

 

Sorry to dig up an old thread, didn't want to create a new one for the same issue. Just purchased a 17 with wireless charging, and I have the overheating issue, both lights blink and the phone/pad are extremely warm. Drive home from the dealership is when I first noticed an issue, both lights blinking and an audible beeping. Didn't have the flir with at the time and don't want to decrease the life of my battery by getting it that again. But here's what I found.

Have tried 2 different Samsung Note 8's, no case or screen protector.

Disappointed in the Qi and the painfully slow charge rate of the USB. Not a huge deal, but having to keep another accessory in the truck to charge devices isn't ideal.

 

Yup, charger was worthless, gave the switch away and put in the switch for the front camera.

 

I picked up a qi receiver for my phone without it installed. Also picked up a pad for the house. Decent but slow. The problem is when I don't have my car and don't have a pad. I incredibly carefully pulled the tab out of the microusb port to use a wall charger and Bam... Shredded in the port. Spent 30 minutes and microtools to get that scrap crap out of the port. Not fun.

Moral, the qi wasn't worth it for me. Done.

Did you end up creating this? I too have been thinking of doing a very similar thing for some time now... was sorta hoping someone else would give it a shot before I dove in. I installed two wireless chargers under the storage tray beneath my stereo on my old Xterra and they worked great. I was excited that the Tacoma came with one, until I realized that it was fairly useless.
