07 4x4 TRD Leveling, 5100's, Larger Tires

Hello All,
My truck: 2007 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Double Cab
Tire- 265/70/R16
Currently everything is stock
Vehicle Usage:
I drive about 2500 miles per month. City mostly. Every other weekend I load up the dirt bikes and head for the Desert. I do off road a bit. Hill climbs, rocky trails, sand and some mud on rare occasions.
Goals- 1. Level the front 2. Get bigger tires (275 or 285BFG’s). 3. Maintain a nice ride. 4. Prevent future maintenance problems.
Budget- $1000+/- for parts and labor (excluding tires)

My original plan was to get some spacers up front to clear the larger tires and give me a little extra clearance. I have hit my skid plate a few times and scratched the bottom of my front bumper a bit. I would really like some 285’s. After reading many of the threads here I have decided not to get spacers and instead get Bilstien 5100’s all around. It sounds like I should go with the 1.75” setting up front to maintain a softer ride. I understand that 275 tires would probably work best with this setup so I am ok with that.

Questions-

• Should I get a Diff Drop?
• Should I get Add-A-Leaf?
• Do I need UCA’s
• If so I any recommendations on brands, estimated cost?

All comments and suggestions welcome. I plan to have this truck a long time so I want to do things right and avoid potential future problems.

I just ordered a 3" lift from ToyTec yesterday. I won't have it installed until next week, but here's some pricing info for you:

OME 3” Lift Coil Kit [881] with AAL ($309.99)
Bilstein 5100 front shocks/pair ($189.99)
Bilstein 5125 rear shocks/pair ($169.99)
Extended brake line 20 ($35.99)
Diff Drop ($29.99)
-----------------------
Total : $735.95

The estimate for installation + alignment : $460

I was informed by the folks at ToyTec that I should have no trouble running any of the following:
285/75R16, 285/70R17, 285/65R18, or 285/55R20
They also recommended that keeping the wheel width around 8" is best.

My stock tires still have lots of life left, so I'll continue to run on stock wheels until the tires need replacing. I'll post before/after pics next week.

 

the diff drop is a definite must have......you dont want vibrations and to tear up your truck!!
add a leaf in the rear is way better and will ride better than a rear block......so yep...go the aal route.
uca's arent exactly needed.....but they can help tremendously with getting some of your alignment back correctly...........total chaos makes some awesome uca's!!
you can get a great 3 inch toytec lift for right around $300......check out their link...... and may i also recommend a set of bilstein 5100 shocks on all 4 corners!!1 they ride awesomely!!! and may i also recommend some stainless brake lines....extended for the lift too!!! dont want brake problems while you are doing anything man!! hope this gives you an idea of some things!!

also...check out they have lots of great things for offroading and ride!!!

 

Thanks for the replys. Can I get just the 5100's all around + a diff drop and leave it at that? Do I need a lift coil kit to go with the 5100's? Do I need a AAL? I was not planning on putting blocks in or anything else in the rear.

 

you can use the stock coils for the 5100's just fine. there may be some couls that are gonna ride a bit better....less progressive though, but the stocks are just fine.

 

I agree with tacomaman06, you don't *need* new coils -- I decided to go with new coils for 2 reasons; [1] Over time you may experience some sag with a lift, and [2] You'll have to practically redo the front lift if you decide to change your mind later. I decided to spend a few extra $, even though it may not be necessary.

Also, its been very difficult for me to get anyone (including ToyTec) to commit to answers regarding wheel/tire size recommendations. You get very conservative answers with lots of "try it and see if it fits". I'm hoping my setup will work out with the wheels/tires I plan to eventually install. Mistakes could be expensive down the road.

 

the only thing with the 5100's.....they are meant to level out a truck, and you will only get 2.5 inches with them......and from heresay....they ride stiff as hell at the top setting. but they would go great with a toytec lift i do believe. you can usually get great deals on ebay from downsouthmotorsports. thats where i got mine. make a decent offer.....they will more than likely take it!!

 

Toku58 mentioned in his sticky concerning the 5100's that ". (But please take note NO One recommends it to be used in conjunction with after market coils) This may result in damage of your suspension components." Does this mean I should not get 5100's and opt for an alternative or just use the 5100's with my stock coils?

 

im gonna say use your stock coils and the 5100's. if i recall right....toytec offers now, a coil over that goes with the 5100's. nice kit, or you can get just the coils if you already have the 5100's.

They are stiff at 2.5". I didn't really notice it too much on the road, but off-road it really throws the cabin around.

 

Dif drop,-yes. You qualify for the rear leaf tsb.(free aal) Gives you an inch lift.With the 5100's set at 1.75 you'll have an 1.25" rake. Not sure if you'll clear your uca's on stock 16's. My 17's would rub w/275's. Install front 5100's,dif drop and alinement at a local shop was 350.The ride now is so much better.

 

My waranty is up since I have 40K miles on the truck. Do I still qualify for the rear leaf TSB?

I am now leaning tward the item below. With 5100's in the rear as well, AAL, Diff Drop, Extended Break Lines and 275's. Think I'll need UCA's with this set up?

It depends on how high you set them. At 2.5" the camber on my wheels is slightly inward at the bottom. It wasn't enough to affect the driving of the truck but it was noticable from the front. I think if you went higher than that, you would probably want UCAs. I bought some from Toytec when I ordered my springs. They gave me $50 off of those too.

As for the warranty on the rear leaf, it's probably up to your dealer. They may since you're only slightly out. I'd try calling the 1-800 number and see if you can work something out. The worst they can do is say no.

Questions:
1. How much will the rear 5125's with the AAL raise the rear?
2. What height setting will I need to use on the front shocks to level with the rear?
3. I have 265 BFG's that came stock on 16" Rims. Will I need new Rims if I go up to 275? 285s?
4. Am I missing anything else that you recomend I get with this set up.

why 5125 billys in the rear instead of 5100's??

 

I talked to Kirk at toytec and I think he said that the 5100's were for the front and the 5125's are for the rear.

 

they make billy 5100's for the front and rear.....just the rears arent adjustable. i have the 5100's on my truck.

 

This is from their site. What do you know of this? Can or should I go with 5100's over these?
