Is it possible to make our engine quieter and sound more refined? It's a bit on the noisy side. I always drive with music on to avoid hearing the engine. Oil and filter change always done at Toyota dealership. If i started to do it my self and replace the oil with fully synthetic motor oil will that do anything? As oppose to make the engine quieter? I believe the sound is normal for all the 4.0L V6 and dealer also stated engine is fine. Just looking for a quick remedy to make it quiter.

It's a truck- so it will be louder. You can dynamat/raamat the cab. That's about the best you've got.

I don't think synthetic oil will help quiet the engine. JMO.

Things I MYSELF have done that have made my engine sound more refined:

    - VSV Isolation Mod
    - 93 Octane

Whether or not either of these items will help you is open to debate. 93 octane does not have this effect for everyone, but as soon as I filled up with my first tank of 93 I IMMEDIATELY noticed the difference in engine sound. It was much "smoother". This may have been easier for me to detect with the catback exhaust and CAI installed. Your mileage may vary.

Installing some rubber washers to isolate the VSV from the housing it's attached to helped decrease the ticking volume...ticking from the valvetrain remains however, and AFAIK there is no way to decrease it.

i totally understand its a truck i don't mind the noise it's just a bit noisy. I love my truck and everything about it. So a noisy engine will not make me get rid of it or anything like that. I just got learn to live with it.

I bought my truck in Tahoe, but I can't afford one of those.

Hey, I know its a truck but that 4.0 v6 motor is louder than any truck I've driven. Traded in my 09 frontier for this thing and the motor noise in the tacoma is awful under strain. Anyway to quiet this lack luster noise maker?

Same engine but the 4runner has a hood liner which makes it harder to hear inside the cab. I'm looking into that. I did the VSV mod and it did quiet that "sounds like an old chevy" sound. Now most of the noise I hear is the timing chain, nothing you can do about that.

I don't mind the noise, I kind of like it. I had a Highlander before and that thing was quiet. I'm used to driving trucks so it feels good to be driving a truck that sounds like a truck.
