You might can get a deal through Trucar.... we tried it, it sucked, but it really depends on what the dealers in your area have worked out with Trucar. We also tried Costco.

What smitty posted below is basically what we did..... we just did it with fewer dealerships. I did drive 200 miles to pick up the truck. We got a good deal though. Even had other dealers call me later and asked what I paid after I told them they lost out. Some called me a liar after I told them.

OP.. the link @smitty99 posted is a very good template to folllow.

As for my opinion on the price?? I think it is too high, I got my Limited with stealth boards, tech premium, and tow for 39xxx before trade and down so my OTD was less. Now while I did not use the shopping template offered, I used the dealership where my wife was the office manager. They love my wife, we also bought a used car for my daughter that day, and I traded in a very clean and well cared for '04 (only had minor fading/clear coat problems from 13 years of FL sun). That is why they gave us the deal.

They don't inflate invoices :) if your referring to the dealer hold back. That's the dealers money from the factory.

Lol ...driving a bit for a vehicle is great for a couple of reasons. 1. Assume you got the truck you wanted at a great deal. 2. It's always fun to get out :).
Doubt any Toyota dealer is losing sleep. Salesperson probably :)

I didn't read much other than the first few post so here's my simple take since I'm kinda in the industry.

Currently new car sales are slumping so there's a lot of inventory out there. Because of that it is a buyers market. Also you're looking at a 2017 when the 2018's will be hitting the lots soon. That means the dealer needs to get the 17's out even quicker. You shouldn't have any problems getting a good deal right now.

Got mine right under invoice. Shop around, the high volume dealers tend to give better deals, at least in my experience.

I honestly have no idea. I just got lucky because around here you can't hardly even find a manual for that price. the reason I don't think that they were suppose to be that cheap is because all 5 Tacomas we looked at were removed from cars.com within hours of our purchase. Anyway the point is the deals are out there you don't have to settle for MSRP.

Try to get close to invoice and it'll be a good enough deal. The problem I see is a lot of people don't do the math and figure out exactly what they are paying. They say they want $500 over invoice and dealer says sure but the number they bring to the table isn't $500 over invoice and there's a handful of fees to go with it. That deal is no longer "$500 over invoice."

That "so you want to buy a tacoma" thread is good. Also take a look at this one to figure out exactly how much you are willing to pay and then offer it to the dealership. They can take it or leave it.

I don't know if it's because I'm in the industry, or because I do my homework or what, but it's a really easy transaction, and I think a lot of people are either just mis-informed or don't know hat they should be doing.
Asking someone else what they paid is rediuclous. Different states have different tax structures, vehicles have different configurations and installed accessories.
Same thing with saying you got a % or $XX off MSRP.
If TTL differs from state to state then OTD price means nothing. So that number is irrelevent.
And then you've got the asking people on the internet factor..way too much bs'ing and lying.

1.Find THE vehicle you want, with THE options you want and THE accessories you want on it
2.Figure out THE invoice for THAT configuration, THOSE option packages, and THOSE installed accessories.
    3. Figure out destination and local TDA if applicable
    4. Once that's done, find one on the ground at a local dealership. If you can find the same thing at multiple dealerships, even better.
    5. Get the stock number for that vehicle and Do the math. Break it all out out and do the math.
    6. Find an internet sales advisor from the dealers website. If there is one without a picture, they are new, pick that one and cold call them.
    7. "I'm calling to Check availability on xxx stock number, is it still available"? That's it, no pleasentries no wasted time BSing. If yes, "I'll be right over"
    8. Walk into the dealership, past all the dong jerkers hanging out up front, past the receptionist and straight into the internet sales room.
    9. Find the person you talked to. Introduce yourself. Give them your breakdown paper with your phone number on it. Tell them to take this deal to their boss and call you when(not if) it's approved.
    10. Leave. Grab some free donuts and coffee on your way out. Go about the rest of your day.
    11. They will call, maybe before you've even got back to your car. If they try to give you any bs, tell them sorry, but so and so(insert internet sales advisor at another dealership who you've never even talked to)who also has the exact same configuration in stock will make this deal for you, so you will have to go there instead and Hang up.

*95% of the time you will get the deal. If they switch gears after you tell them this to accept #11, the door is open to ask for more since they jerked you around and think you have another deal on the table.
If they take the deal upfront, you have now set the ceiling on price, and have the ability
To try and squeeze even more out of it by baiting them that you will be a lifelong customer, refer people to them, or that you'll be in the market for a car for your wife/gf/mom/kids in the near future and will come back to them if they sweeten the deal.
    12. If for some reason it doesn't work, wash, rince and repeat with the next dealer.

    13. Once you have gotten to this point and gotten your deal with whatever dealer, tell them you are busy and don't have time to waste in F&I. You don't want any of the
add-on crap they are pitching. Tell them to go find out which F&I person is going to do your deal, how long it's going to take them to get you in, and to tell that person in advance not to waste your time with BS alarms, scotchguars etc.
Also remind them that you won't be paying any processing fees. It's part of their cost of doing buisnees, just like doing the PDS or washing it. You don't pay for those, why would you pay for them to do the paperwork?
13a. This one is optional- if they tell you it's going to be more than a half hour to get you into F&I that's not acceptable. Tell them you are hungry and to go get some petty cash to 1.give you $ to go get something to eat 2. Send someone to get you something to eat 3. Order you soemthing to be delivered.
(Some dealers even have facilities onsite that they have accounts with. They will buy you all the subway or Starbucks you can consume)
    14. Sign your paperwork, take your keys, chuck the deuce, and leave with with your new vehicle you just got at invoice or better..and a belly full of free food

How do you know which dealers are the high volume dealers? Is it just the big ones with lots of new cars on the lot?

It's funny how many people are absolutely rude and disredpectful to car salespeople. Understand that they are there to make a living. The same as any other person doing a variety of different jobs. No one try's to figure out how to get the " best " deal from a waiter or a grocery store
Typically that would be a very good clue. Toyotavworks on a " turn and earn" platform. There district and area managers give out " special allocations " to performing stores.
These are the stores that will burn a car for there numbers as they know they have plenty more coming.
If you go at night at end of month every store is trying to pad there month or make there month.
Go in just before closing on Last day of month managers want to go home and are mor agreeable then :).

that doesn't mean people aren't generally rude, have absurd expectations and show a side of themselves they shouldn't. I've worked for tips and believe me people are rude, disrespectful, and completely inconsiderate that I was trying make a living and they were spending a fraction of what a vehicle cost. This was especially true with certain demographics such as car sales people.

The truth is the truth. With that said I don't condone being rude to sales people. My point is that they are as guilty as the next guy.
