Bilstein 6112

I'm running the Wheeler's 1.5" progressive AAL.

 

Have a slimeline bumper and winch on the way. Which will add about 200lbs to the front. Only reason I went 6/5. Otherwise I would have gone 5/4.

 

Before/after: Gained 2.00" lift in the front and 1.875" lift in the back.
6112's are at the 4/5 setting, 5160's and dakars in the back. This setup soaks up large bumps like a pro. Smaller bumps that would compress the shocks quickly are a bit more pronounced in the feel, but potholes, speed bumps, and large rocks are absorbed very well by the suspension. This setup is super smooth on dirt in 4WD, I would recommend it. Not valved for desert running, but still smoother than the stock TRD OR suspension on the highway and on 4WD roads. Overall an awesome mod without completely breaking the bank.

Sorry I don't have many pics of the rear suspension installed, it was after dark. Overall it took us about 5 hours for the install, but we were taking our sweet time and trying not to die in the heat

Advice: I got the 2016+ Tacoma 6112/5160 kit for my 2017 TRD OR and was going to install myself this weekend, but broke my proximal humerus and cannot do that kind of work for at least 3 months. So, I'm looking for an installer, either my dealer if they've done it before or find someone else in town who has done it. I note on here that someone's dealer did it. I'll ask around. Just complaining.

By the way I had that set-up on a 2013 Baja and it was great on and off road. When I got the 2017 TRD OR with the stock shocks on July 6, I thought I had a boat - bouncing away, leaning... I was spoiled by the 6112/5160system.

 

6112's (2nd notch) with 650# springs carrying CBI Moab 2.0 aluminum bumper, ComeUp 9.5rs and CBI aluminum skids....ride is great!

 

6112 on 4/5 and OME EL095R Dakars in the rear

 

What did everyone use to decompress/compress their spring on the B6112s? I want to adjust mine up a notch or two. Went to Advance Auto and rented a "strut spring compressor" and it wouldn't fit to clamp down the springs. Tried every which way but couldn't make it work.

What's everyone using???

 

I have never worked on the 6112, but the way the lower springs see sits on top of the circlip used to adjust the height, the only feasible way would be to remove the coilover and use a regular automotive spring compressor. The only way to do it on the truck is maybe find one that is very thin but I still do not know if you have enough room in the wheel well to compress the spring enough

 

Anyone have thoughts on these vs icon stage 2? Or toytec Boss Performance? How does the adjustability differ? I hear toytec is the simplest. I'm probably 75/25 road to off road ratio.

 

The Toytec adjusts by a threaded collar. These use set points with a circlip. I dont know Toytec's warranty. These have a lifetime 100k warranty and rebuildable. Plus, if you need a stronger spring, you can run Toytec, King etc coil over springs with the 6112

 

Those did not work for me....I had to bring them to a shop where they had a wall mounted spring compressor. I have Eibach 650# springs FWIW.

 

Looks really sharp! Are those 265/75 or 285/75? I tried to zoom in but can't tell. They look like 265s but just wanted to make sure.

Gotcha. I just stepped down from 285/70R17 E load to 265/70R17 C load and I'm liking it much better. MPG went up 2-2.5 mpg, suspension works better, brakes work better, steering is lighter, etc. It's funny that many times 265s look too small in pictures but they almost always look just fine in person IMHO. Your truck even looks really good in the pics with the 265s!

 

Yea I didn't want to run into any of those issues or do a CMC should I one day get some aftermarket wheels. More of a function over form kinda guy anyways so it wasn't a tough decision. Thanks! I did a boatload of research as well before buying my Cooper S/T Maxx 285/70R17 and I talked myself into them due to all the outstanding reviews. After using them for about 7000 miles, I decided they were just too heavy and stiff for my liking. I'm a PreRunner and my 6112s are on the 4th position which is the highest recommended. I got more lift than advertised like about 3" and I'd prefer it not be so high. Also, it feels like I'm topping out the shocks when off-roading. I wanted to lower the clip position but I didn't try it with the 285s because I thought they might rub in several places. Now that I'm running 265s, I'm contemplating third or second clip position. I'm running Dakars out back with the 3rd leaf removed. I'll probably take out the top overload as well to keep it level depending on which clip position I use. Not really looking forward to having to figure out the best way to move the clip.

 

I have a few questions regarding the 6112s and what I plan on doing

2015 DCLB 4x4 Sport
Camper shell constant 200lb bed weight.
I might carry 400-500lbs a few times a year, and tow an ate from time to time.
265/70/17s or 255/75/17 will be my next tires.

6112 up front most likely on third notch (assuming I will get 1.59-2"?). Trying to avoid UCAs at this time.

My question is about rear springs... If I run dakars will I get too much lift in the rear? I like stock the stock rake and wouldn't mind a slight level. I know a few leafs can be taken out for less overall height, so that might be a possibility.

Or would a different spring be more suitable for my needs?

I'd venture to say the best way to adjust the snap ring is taking the whole assembly out. Even though it is a PITA for the minuscule amount of work you'll be doing, I wouldn't want to be poking my fingers in there while the coil is compressed by a spring compressor or something of the like and trying to adjust the ring.

As for the height I can't really speculate as mine are the MY2016/17 6112s and I got right around 1.5" on the 4/5 settings as advertised for the DCSB 4WD, which is the second from highest recommended setting

 

I'll let you know how my setup goes. I have the parts in my truck bed now, but won't be installing for a bit yet. I plan to have 2016 rear leafs + headstrong 3-leaf AAL in the rear of my 2013 2nd gen. My front 6112 will be at the 2nd clip.

 

Go with the dakars. I drive a 3rd gen DCLB and run a camper shell with the light duty pack, the truck still maintains a tiny bit of rake when empty and sits level when i put 400 pounds of gear in the back. you can always take out a leaf if you dont like the lift in the back
