sure it makes sense...BUT...just because the previous owner put on the tint...its still your responsibility to make sure your vehicle adheres to the law...

Yes, and you can fault me there easily. I bought it from the dealer, so i just figured it was legit. No one has ever pulled me over - cop dad says "no worries" So.. I figured i was good. Honestly - still think i am.

if theres a question about if its too dark...it probably is...

asking a cop to sign off on it is one thing...producing a picture of a truck that is NOT yours to APPEAR to have "fixed" the issue is where youre starting to cross those ethical/legal boundaries of falsifying stuff

I just recently got pulled over for speeding :] and the policeman( aka, officer dipshit) noticed that my tint was too dark.. it was 20percent, and legal limit is 25 up front... so he gave me a warning.. however.. I don't think I'm going to "fix it".. your tint is not too dark at all.

    of course they will

find a TW member who's a LEO or attorney in Cali and find out their opinion

i personally like the tint...and it's probably within the legal limit here in SC...

the problem is that laws are all somewhat open to interpretation by LEOs/judges/attorneys and this may be the case here...if the law states NO film then you could theoretically smoke the glass as dark as you wanted...but if it says no tint...then youre SOL...

we dont do the whole cop sign off on it deal here and im glad...

It's wrong. The California Vehicle code says no tint.

I got pulled over the other day too in fresno. I know its illegal but i have a nice deck and gps in my truck and i like to use the "out of sight, out of mind" tactic with people. The CHP understood but still gave me a ticket. Oh, well. It wasnt my first and it isnt going to be my last!

Not true at all. Window tint can be as black as you want it as long as it's not on the front windows or 4" below the roofline on the windshield. Suspension lifts are legal and can actually go up to stupid douchebag levels before you'd get a ticket (much higher than any Taco I've seen). There's also nothing illegal about changing your exhaust. Many have done it. It's just if it results in greater pollution (removing cats), there's a good chance you won't pass emissions.

I'm sorry to say but your dad is wrong. The law is pretty clear. Whether a cop will enforce or not is one thing, but it is in the vehicle code as a violation.

+1. Here's the link to the California code again.

I have my stereo deck/gps too, as well as two 12'' subs in the back... I have dark tint for security (although I know that dark tint attracts people bc of its mysteriousness)

In Maryland they have a light and meter to use. Takes all the opinion out of what is too dark. Shine the light, read other side with the meter and pass or fail. The end.

I really like the look of tinted glass on most vehicles. My wife has epilepsy and she does not drive because of it. She actually goes outside wearing glasses we get from a welding supply shop that would be used when operating a torch. (REALLY dark) Tint would be really nice for her comfort.

However, there is a piece of the conversation that no one has mentioned yet. There are reasons for the tint laws. Some times the reason is for the safety of the officers when performing stops. If they cannot see into a vehicle it raises the risk for them. The other side is safe operation of the vehicle. Have you ever tried to drive at night in the rain with dark sunglasses? You cannot see well. I have driven vehicles with even relatively mild tint on the front windows and it is a challenge to actually see what is around you at times.

Another potential safety issue, I went to a traffic school once and the instructor said it was outlawed because it holds the glass together in an accident. The glass is designed to shatter in the event of a crash. With the film on it, I can hold the glass together, creating larger shards. I don't know if there's any truth to that or not. It wouldn't explain why they allow clear film.

yah the cop thats stopped me said it was if the car gets stolen they can identify the driver easier, and so they can see if youre doing anything illegal in the car

but you can see me in my car just fine.. so.. kinda a bummer.
