I've never understood that phrase. Why are you turning the leaf over? why not just get another leaf?

And the leaves are probably on the ground, so it's probably fall, and everything is about to die, and it's going to get really cold and dreary really soon....and the leaf is already dead....like, what is life?

I imagine it would be as if someone had lost something (for instance the correct way to do something) and was looking for it in a pile of leaves, instead of turning the same leaf over and over again,(to do the same thing and expect different results is insanity) they turn over a new leaf
