I purchased a new 2017 Limited Taco, 4x4 in April, and have experienced very poor gas mileage and difficulty pulling an unloaded flat bed dual axle car hauler.

My combined freeway and city MPG's have been steady around 14 mpg with no trailer attached.

I tried to pull my flat bed, dual axle car trailer with nothing on it the other day and had a heck of a time getting it over 65 mph. The trailer does not have a fold up ramp so there is no airflow drag. The floor is wood and the siderails are about 12" high....a very simple and basic flatbed car hauler 8' X 16'.

Even when it got to 65, it had zero acceleration left over. There was no way I could pull any type of load on the trailer much less a car. There just wasn't enough power. Couldn't imagine pulling a boat or camper trailer.

    Does this seem right???

    Auto or Manual?

If auto, did you try placing in ECT mode?

No I did not but I have a Shift Sense Pro and it didn't seem to help while pulling the trailer.

For towing it's recommended to be in S4 or S5 with ECT on. Not sure if you can stay in those gears with the SSP installed.

Towing has never been kind to MPGs.

Unloaded I average about 20-21 mpgs per tank if I keep it below 65mph and don't use cruise control.

Sounds normal but one of the reasons I don't like the truck.

It doesn't seem right, but I've had similar experiences. I see people hauling relatively heavy stuff with these trucks and it blows my mind every time considering my personal experiences. If I had to pull even a smaller camper I think I rather rent a truck, but you see people saying their trucks do it with ease...

    No it doesn't lol.
Nothing about the post sounds normal, 14 mpg or trouble pulling an empty trailer.

Try harder, I expect better from you lol. You can do it.

Trailer have electric brakes? Maybe slightly engaged? Or, trailer bearings seem OK. Reset ECU and see if that helps mpg? Just some thoughts.

Asking the obvious here, but have you tried removing the SSP and seeing if you get better MPG and towing capabilities?

Absolutely normal for my truck to get 14mpg when towing a light load.

In fact just this weekend I towed a ~300lb Aluminum boat on a ~500lb trailer with a 20 quart cooler, small tackle box and a marine battery---in total we are talking no more than 1200 to 1300lbs. The truck averaged 14MPG up to the lake (climbing elevation) and 15.2MPG overall for the trip. I know the figures are correct because I filled up at the gas station near my house when I departed at 430AM and did not deviate from my stop at the lake or on my return home in any significant way, shape or form.

A dual axle flatbed trailer probably weighs twice as much or MORE than what I towed.

You won't see this because you ignored me, but you can't read, apparently.

The 14 mpg is without any trailer.

I was getting 10 mpg with the trailer connected.

Honestly there have been people complaining about gas mileage on these trucks as low as the 16s combined. I think 14 is on the low end of anything I've seen. @SamChieftan had poor mileage IIRC for quite some time.

The lacking quality in assembly/production has me questioning everything on these trucks. I wouldn't be surprised if something is FUBARed with yours.

Is this value based on the truck computer or actual tank fill up calculations?

I get 15 to 16 average around town driving. My combined with my daily freeway commute is about 19.3. If OP is doing mostly city driving I could see it being pretty low.

AZ speed limits on side streets are high. 45mph between lights but most people are doing 5 to 10 over to keep with traffic flow. So if you hit a lot of stop and go, it's speed way up, slow way down and repeat.
