Spray rust converter on that, followed by fluid film. Your light surface rust will disappear

I've gotten in the habit that once in late fall, and again in early spring, I'll hit rust spots with some rust converter, wait a day, then some satin black rustoleum. Just part of the joy of living in the rust belt. Salt rocks and bits of concrete kicked up by the plow trucks are going to take their toll on most any coating.

redneck pinstriping, various stickers, not 1 but 2 glade air fresheners because I fart a lot.
Wire brush and rattle can, that's really all you need. How do I know? Well I've served on ship in the Marines for 6 months and that's our method for rust removal for EVERYTHING. Basically you are just constantly replacing the surface. Not special paint either just generic rattle can. I do my truck once a year and no rust. Hit it in the fall and again in the spring and all will be well.

That link bar bolt looks a little scketchy in my book...

As far as warranty goes I think Toyota offers 5 years of warranty unlimited miles on rust. Read your manuals people.

The "followed by fluid film" part is important as the various "rust conversion" products (Loctite's Extend, Rustoleum's Rust Reformer, etc.) are not rust preventative coatings--all they do is convert existing rust into more stable (more stable, not "rust proof") compounds. They are great at what they do but applying them and not following up with an OTG rust preventative coating is a waste of money and time.

The makers of these products tout them as being some sort of miracle juice, they are not. They do what they do well, converting relatively minor surface rust to a stable and well adhered boundary layer-however they are not rust preventatives up to the task of being applied once and saving a Tacoma frame in one of the "rust-bucket" states...

Yeah, but in the Marines you did it as instructed, when instructed--or they would explain to you in great detail all about the Pendleton brig...

I.and you, understand--but a whole lot of people read the exaggerated "headline" BS that Loctite and Rust-Oleum spout without ever reading the fine print about how the rust converters are only a first step (and to be honest not entirely necessary if you have an adequate supply of elbow grease) in the rust control process. I have read numerous posts here and elsewhere of owners religiously applying only rust converters and being baffled as why the rust kept going...

The boxed front part of a tacoma frame is very tough to clean/'rust proof' due to the many very thin wielded/riveted layers, note rectangular opening:

Salt/sand/etc gets between the layers, and the fun begins!

Oh I hear ya loud and clear, I've lived on the east coast of Canada my entire life and no wire brush and "rust paint" will ever touch rust. Rust check/fluid film/krown is what you need. They displace moisture, unlike uncle "joe" who simply sprays motor oil under his car/truck.

This is true, but we can try our best to let rust inhibitors creep into these layers, if salt can creep in, so can annual treatments of rust check/fluid film/krown.

Unfortunately I wholeheartedly agree. The frame structure does not seem to have been even remotely designed with any consideration of the "salt-belt" ("rust bucket") environment, nor does the grade of steel appear to have been especially purposely selected for such environments. Being somewhat of a Toyota fan-boy I had at first thought it was Toyota's market position that made them an attractive target, but search as I might I can find no other pickup maker facing such enormous, near catastrophic, frame failures.

Failures that have been going on for 20+ years, with early reports from the '11 to '15 and 3rd gen models not being all that encouraging...

I thought frame rot was normal in the rust belt. People talk about it in every forum for every manufacture. Google frame rot. Jeeps, Ford, Gm, they all complain about it. I would clean it up and go the fluid film route everyone keeps suggesting.
