    That's awesome! No commute.

Aside from being a skilled operator, how do you know the position on a blade that big? Aside from looking at the top, are there cameras? I know you guys use gps and laser grading, but I'm assuming it's different in the quarry.

Ive got a D11 being delivered over the next 2 days. Only way to get it into the job is to cross a set of twin 36" forced main sewer lines (5' deep) which the sewer district is not gonna allow me to do so we had to set 3 railroad cars and bridge over the lines. It's been a royal fricken pain in the ass.

I'm hella jelly of your commute!

on anything bigger than a D-6 you can't see the corner bits so you just kind of get a feel for where the blade is at. having said that I've seen operators with 30+ years experience make 3 or 4 passes with a D-4 and the blade is 6" off the ground then stop to ask how it looks now. the look they give you when you say it looks just like it did 30 fucking seconds ago is priceless.

That's the part I don't get. The "feel for it". Seems like you could take out a row of parked cars, in the DMV employee lot, and not feel anything in that beast. Not that I think of doing such things...

I ran backhoe and excavator for 11 years before going back to logging. I can feel in the hydraulics a half inch pvc pipe. You don't away go full power. Always full idle and ease into the machine. It was the same on my 8k I had.
