So ever since I discovered you can run longer filters years and years ago, as I'm sure many of you know, so long as the base is the same I have always run an oversized filter.

The benifits of an oversized are; more oil capacity, more surface area for cooling, more filter media for more filtration, less resistance in the system, leading to less wear and potentially longer change intervals. Plus they are typically the same price or within a buck or two.

I've been running WIX 51516xp on everything I own, well recently I discovered the wix 51515xp it has the same size threads and O-ring. It's huge! It holds over 3/4 a quart of oil!

If you're looking to run a larger filter you can't go wrong here, clears everything just fine! It does hang over the oil cooler a bit but the seal sits exactly where and how it should.

Installed pix with the 51516xp for reference. The 51516 is the same diameter as stock but almost twice as long. The 51515 is yet longer and larger in diameter.

A lot of TL owners, we used to run the s2000 oil filters on our cars. The stock filter was so small compared to the s2000 filter. Definitely will keep this in mind for my next oil change.

Should fit any 05-10 Tacoma with the 1GR and top mounted oil filter base. In 2011 Toyota moved the oil filter to the bottom of the engine and changed from spin on to the evil Ready-Strip 13 sided BS drop in cartridge style t̶o̶ ̶m̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶r̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ because it's better for the environment.

As with any non standard application however and your own mods you may have made please confirm fitment with your own individual system. I can however confirm that the O-Ring and filter thread size and pitch matches the OE reciver. As for clearances, YMMV. :D

It's possible it was a mid year production change (Toyota's always improving methodologies) or it was the built in 2011 but 2012MY when they changed it, eather way you lucked out! Filter up top is a much better setup for many a reason.

I couldn't be wrong about the year range, I got my info from the internet! :smack:

If they moved it to the bottom of the engine in 2011 it is possible that is true only for the model which is not oil cooler equipped.

Also a possibility didn't consider that. I do have a TRD-OR with tow package so oil cooler and big alternator.

The 4Runner/FJ 1GR had the cartridge filter. All Taco 1GR's had the top mounted spin on filter

I think someone in the engineering department decided to play a joke on the production department and sent them the specs for an oil filter for a 1955 Chevy. The production department said, "well, these are the specs we were given. Lets build it." After that no one wanted to take responsibility for the joke so it went to full on production.

That would piss me off if I had to deal with that every oil change.

Better for the environment? That's like saying electric cars are better for the environment when we're burning coal to produce electricity.

Don't forget all the good clean processes used to make and "recycle" the several hundred pound batteries.

I have the sport with tow pkg and oil cooler.

If models did not get built with tow pkg they did not have an oil cooler.

I see this thing is $12 which for me is about 3x the cost of the OEM oil filter. It takes about 5 seconds to change a filter ( without an oil change), so I'm not sure what the benefit of this is. Not sure I'd want to leave the same oil filter on my truck for a year and a half.

I have been using the oem 1gr filters on my 2tr- the 1gr filter is significantly longer than stock.
