The air injection is a concern for me but not worried about it currently they are affordable aftermarket an don't look to hard to replace. Just hate the whoosh when I turn it off but grown accustomed to it.

I think unless you are pre 2015 right? Or did that color come out before?

My $0.02 - do NOT get a third gen right now. I went from a 2010 Tacoma that I loved to a 2017 Tacoma that I hated back to a 2015 Tacoma that is my favorite yet. I only had the 2017 Taco for 5k miles before I was driven absolutely insane by the awful transmission/engine pairing. It's not made up - it's a real issue, especially driving on road above 65mph that isn't completely flat. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great/improved things about the 3rd gens, but the 3.5l paired with the 6 speed auto is a deal breaker.

To be fair it seems @OVTune is remedying a lot of these issues.

First decision to make is if you're in the 2nd or 3rd gen camp. Then go from there.

Healthy test drives of each required.

And there are a lot of differences in looks. Some folks like one over the other, some of us, not so much.

Part of the answer lies in how you will use the truck 80% of the time.

In any of the models you suggest aftermarket warranties are available, should you crave the 'comfort' that brings. For me, that has never been a factor. I've only had 3 new vehicles and a 4th new enough to still have warranty (out of 50+ vehicles) and I've had one warranty issue. One. And it was covered under an extended warranty, was AC related. On an '89 Ford.

So I'm not a warranty freak. Although, with the 3rd gen, it seems like a good idea to have one.

    Good luck.

So someone that bought a 69 Boss 429 back in 1969 and still has it today was not an investment?

What's 'fair' about that? I wish them success, but the aftermarket should not have to be the solution to a $35k vehicles drivability issues.

Don't forget that if you buy new you also get the 2 year ToyotaCare free maintenance. It's not much but it was nice for not to have to worry about paying for maintenance for awhile.

Depends on the condition of the car and how much they've spent over it's lifetime to keep it Meecum worthy.

If you add up all the bills, my guess is you'd have done better buying stock in IBM or Coca Cola.

(I had GTO #104, and glad I didn't keep it. From an investment standpoint that is)

That's correct. And you do of course pay for it, in the price of the vehicle. It's a feel good technique.

CPO 2nd-gen seems to be the ticket, in my opinion, unless you're just in love with the extra convenience features of the 3rd-gen.

I will say that the resale value of the Tacoma closes the gap between new and used, but the difference in price still is far from insignificant. You can do a lot with the $5k+ that you save.

Im just saying he bought for $4700 new in 69 and stuck it in a barn and pulled it out today and took it to auction and gets $175k for it. That IS an investment.

That's 7.5% compounded annually over the 50 years.

It would have to be a good bit higher interest to offset all the expenses of the preservation, like being stored in conditioned space, regularly serviced, occasionally driven and carefully preserved. (sticking it in a barn won't keep it at that quality) Plus keeping it insured. Just in case.

All that has to come off the 'profit'.

The common man will never pull something like that off. So the common man should never consider a vehicle an investment. It's an expense.

I had pretty much the same thing typed out, went to take a dump, then came back and you beat me to it .

I was thinking the same thing. 7.5% annually isn't that great and that is before backing out expenses paid to the auction house, for restoration, and the government's cut. Then, if you value liquidity at all...

I'd argue that nearly all vehicle purchases are an investment, but only a fraction of a fraction of a percent have a positive return financially (lots of Pontiac G8 GXP owners got lucky). That said, I can buy in to categorizing it as an expense instead.

Yep, you could end up with MORE powertrain warranty buying CPO than buying new, if it has low enough miles.

You're right. I'm just saying that if you cant stomach paying 27k for a used truck with up to 50k miles, when a 3rd gen is just a few thousand more, there is now a fix to most of the issues.

I'm on the 2nd gen camp until the 3rd gen has been vetted by TW. I am struggling to fork over the money for a used one because of how expensive they are, and how close they are to the 3rd gens.
