I had an old bear bow I used for bow fishing but I got rid of it because I couldnt find cams to shorten the draw length...Id like to get a bow fishing rig again that was some fun stuff.

Im not ready to buy a new bow but when do you think its time to buy a new one? I look at the prices today and they've gone up a lot since I first started bow hunting in 2009. I like shooting my Mathews and it was decent priced, around $500 new. Ive seen some Hoyt models over $1000...way too rich for my blood...I take good care of my bow so I think it will last a long time, just replacing strings as needed. Everything else looks fine on it and its 8 or so yrs old..

Usually the price will drop on current models (2017 or 2016), when they announce the newer models and that usually happens around when the ATA happens. But the price drop is so low its not that noticeable and to the point where you might as well just get the latest and greatest.

The only way to get a discounted price on flagship bows is probably through ArcheryTalk Classifieds. My friend got his bow that route and it was an amazing deal. You just have to frequent the site and keep a look out for the bow you want.

This is what I am currently researching. I have my old Hoyt laying around after I bought my Prime and I would like to turn it in to a bow fishing rig. I'm not too familiar with what the options are when it comes to cams to switch out to make it easier.

Mine is an old Parker Stealth Hunter, I think it was made in 2002-2003. Paid around $150.00 for it, used.
You're right, new bow prices are ridiculous. I might buy a newer used one someday, but I'm so familiar with this bow, it's become an old friend.

Edited for actual year of the bow. It's not as old as I thought. :p

how old? You Prob are stuck at the weight it is...I needed cams to shorten the draw length but couldnt find any so I got rid of mine. You may need to find a cheap adjustable bow

It's an '05. I can adjust the weight down to 40# but it'll be the draw length I'm thinking that will be the issue.

Welcome to the old bow club! There are quite a few of us on here. Yes, some of the new bows are very light. I have shot most of them and IMO they do not shoot that much better then the bow I have now, and the prices are really high. I'm looking to buy another bow like I have so I have one i case something happens to mine.

Thanks;) yeah I just read an article and a $1000 bow is still only 328fps IBO..mine is still decent at 310 IBO I know actual is lower but thats marketing. I just dont know why they are jacking up the prices more and more...also same article had a $2000 crossbow...now that was putting out some major FPS but still thats ridiculous...
are you trying to shorten it? 40-45 is prob good for fish I would guess. You can always look for a cheap Mathews craze or similar that adjusts a lot.

MARKETING! There are some many people that have to have the latest and greatest. Some even think it makes them a better shot or hunter. I starting hunting with a 40lb pull bear recurve no sights,no release, and wooden arrows. I still got plenty of deer with it. It's not the arrow it's the Indian.

Aside from Three Rivers, anyone know where I could get other arrows to shoot with my longbow?
I have some already, wooden ones from ebay. Surprisingly straight too.

They (bow maker, Rudder Bows) don't suggest carbon or aluminum, but that doesn't mean they can't be fired. They're so much easier to find and affordable too!

My longbow is hickory, 72", 45lb @ 28", I draw to at least 30", current arrows are spined at who knows what and they're around 33-34" total length.

Yes I am trying to shorten it. I don't want to have to lock out the cams at full draw in order to shoot. I feel like it'll take too long with how fast things go on the water and I don't want to be locked out for so long that my shoulders get so tired I fling one to the shore line. With the fishing bows I've seen in the the store, such as an AMS or similar, those cams don't lock out. You draw and release. I'm not a seasoned bowfisherman so perhaps I am over thinking things.

I guess it depends what type of fish you are after? If you are silver carp fishing then you would need something quick. but typically if its carp or gar type fish they usually creep up on them in a boat or on the bank and just draw and shoot. basically like a long bow just sit and wait till one comes near and draw and shoot real quick. Always aim a little lower than the target if I remember correctly.
