If this thread is already out there, sorry I couldn't find it. I'm currently in the process of "murdering out" my 2014 Tacoma TRD. I love the way the stock exhaust sounds but I can do away with the chrome tip. I found someone's rig where they cut the exhaust after it passes over the rear axle. I don't think there should be any issues doing this but I was wondering what our the pros and cons to this? Also what would I use to cut the exhaust? Would I expect my exhaust to be louder?

Sound reflecting off of pavement and echoing off it and the bed when your idling.
How much different, i dunno. Did the same long ago, but not stock exhaust.

The stock exhaust is pretty quiet so you may not notice a thing.

    Agreed, sawzall

    Nice avatar! Go CATS!

I cut my exhaust at nearly the same place, right after crossing over the axle. Can't see it, so why put a tip on the end that can get hung up on stuff in the woods?

    No noticeable sound changes.

There is absolutely no con to doing this.

If you off road and don't have the turn out cut, you risk shoving it up into the bedside behind the tire

With the bed and cabin being separate in a truck, maybe it isn't an issue, but is there no worry about trapping the exhaust under there at low speeds/stop?

Cut mine exactly like that 2.5 years ago. Never noticed a difference in sound.

I put the tip back on it because she likes the tip. :spy:

in some states for example PA, it is technically illegal if your exhaust tip does not reach the outer edge of the vehicle

"" (5) An exhaust system shall extend and discharge completely to the outside edge of the vehicle body, including a truck bed, or as originally designed. ""

I have also considered doing this for a cleaner look. I don't know what I'm waiting for. Maybe this weekend...

The only draw back is that the exhaust will make its way into the cab. Look at the magnaflow books, they tend to describe where tips need to exit in order to prevent the exhaust from getting back into the cab.

BBN!!! My dude! I'm definitely going through with doing this. I'll still put a tip on it but with a hose clamp instead of welding one on there but did you use a sawzall when you cut yours?

My biggest concern is cutting it smoothly. Are gonna put a tip on yours also?

Make sure the sawsaw rests on the exhaust that way it cuts clean. You can also unbolt it and pu tit on a vice. The hangers tend to make it a pain to cut at times as they let everything shake.

I personally didn't like the look of the chrome hanging out either and I opted for more noise because why not. Long story short with the turn down just before the axle i have noticed more rumble/rattle in the cabin which is rather droning when your making a long haul at a constant 80 mph. Though i am running dual 2.5 inch pipes with flowmaster 10 series which is significantly noisier than the borla exhaust even if it was piped out to the tail gate. But with stock exhaust i would imagine minimal disturbance in the cabin though it would be more than before the cutting.

Its all experimental till you dial in what you want. I did the same amazing exhaust i did on a G37 (VQ 3.7L) on a frontier (VQ 4.0L) and it sounded like turds on the frontier. Had to redo the whole thing with two 40series and it sounded great.
