I just installed some extra Toyota D-rings in my bed. I didn't use the bed bolts, just the supplied Torx head bolts and plates with welded nuts. How strong is the composite bed for this application? I plan to use the rings as tie down points for my Honda Rancher ATV. Should be fine eh?

thats a lot of weight to pull on a very small area. unless you have large backer plates its just going to rip right through if the load shifts quickly

    imo anyways

I did the same thing, not for the same reason. I won't be tieing down anything too heavy. I'm curious to know how the bed would hold up.

Ok then I'll used the bed bolts to fasten the two I have for the front set. Thanks.

If you followed the instructions and mounted them correctly, the max. weight capacity for each D-Ring is 440 lbs.

Is that rating posted on the Toyota website? No trying to be a dick, I just like somewhere to "see for myself."

The ones I installed are on the floor of the bed. I'll keep those for smaller loads.

Now I'm torn between mounting my other set on the walls of the bed (per the Toyota instructions) or on the front bed bolts. I think the bed bolt idea will be the better option, but I would lose the swivel function. No rush, I'll decide by the weekend.

Yeah I'm thinking just the same. I also plan to run a strap from the rear hitch of the ATV to the rear hitch of the truck to prevent smashing through the rear window.

With two front bed-bolt-mounted d-rings, the rear hitch strap and straps from each of the rear factory-installed d-rings I would likely be in a good spot for load security. I also have the bed-rail cleats to work with too, though I don't have as much faith in those as the d-rings.

the bed cleats are only rated at 220lbs.... not sure if i trust that though.

the other tie down points you plan to use sounds good :)

Cool thanks for the reply... you think I can pull some force on the rear factory-installed d-rings?

i use mine steadily for work and have yanked on them quite a bit. holding down sheets of plywood/drywall/materials. with the 4 d rings on the bed bolts you should be good

mine are a lil bent up but i was hauling 12ft pressure treated 2x10s and hit a bad bump and rocked everything hard (bounced the load even with it ratchet strapped down)

Anyone throw something heavy in the bed when it's -20F outside? I have not heard of one breaking in the cold yet and I know they sell them way up in Canada.

Mine has made some awful noises when throwing firewood back there in the winter time, especially the front section underneath the rear window. I usually take it pretty easy after that. A junk of firewood could go through the front section pretty easy in the cold if you wanted it to. There has been a number of occasions I thought for sure that i had it cracked.

Where most people are getting cracks are in the two aluminum uprights in the rear on either side of the tailgate. Hairline cracks seem to develop regularly down by the tailgate hinges and begin to slowly spread upwards. Checked mine just now and I also have cracks on both side. Truck is going in tomorrow for a warrantied wheel bearing so we'll have to see what the dealership says on the matter.

I posted this in another thread about an ATV hitting the back glass. I beleive that if you can load it in backwards, that the rear tires will hit the bed rail, therefore not allowing the racks to hit the glass. Worth a try!!!

^^I've never carried an ATV in my bed but I don't think you should have anything that heavy sliding around in there. I broke my bed transporting a slot machine (about 300 lbs), I was careless and didn't tie it down.
