So if you wreck and get hurt, can you sue?

Seems to be a growing problem that could get worse . The 2018's now being manufactured could be using the same defective parts that are causing the leaks in the 2017's. Who knows how many model years it will take to finally flush all of the defective parts out of the supply chain.

I'll let other people pay to sign up for the beta testing and wait to see if they can eventually put out a truck worth paying a average price of $37 K

I would be seriously shocked if they've used the supply of old
parts prior to releasing the new trucks, I'm sure the 2018's will have them as well.

Its a shame if they plan on usin gtheir full supply of bad parts . I nkow it takes some time to get x amount of parts made and the logistics involved too but still, they should stop production i think till its addressed.

I remain unconvinced there are any "bad parts" involved in this situation, just poor assembly and quality control. This is no better evidenced than by the recall notice's own inspection and correction procedures. The fact that trucks on the recall list--that exhibit no signs of "leakage"--are "fixed" by just properly torquing the carrier mounting nuts indicates that none of the parts (nuts, gasket, studs) are inherently suspect.

It's a clear statement of "If we caught it in time then just tighten the nuts." If the parts were suspect the remedy would be to replace the parts without regard to misting/weeping/leaking or not.

I believe is is the magnitude of the number that are misting/weeping/leaking (and their over-cautiously including the misting/weeping axles in the "OMG unsafe to drive we have to seize your truck" category) that caught Toyota with their pants down...

One of the Truck magazines did a story on this fiasco and the Toyota rep they interviewed stated that Toyota started a "new re-tightening process" starting in March of this year. So that lead credence that they just weren't torqued correctly, just like they weren't filled correctly with ATF fluid

It HAPPENED suddenly and without warning. Today at 4:00pm EST, I got a totally unexpected call from Hendrick Toyota of Apex. My truck was fixed and ready to be picked up! As I swapped my rental for my beloved Tacoma I instantly felt the testosterone surge through my body as the RAV4 induced estrogen levels in my blood began to plunge. Gone was the desire to shuttle young children between school, sports practices, and home, replaced by an overwhelming urge to fill the bed with camping gear, motorcycles, and the carcasses of dead animals that I had vanquished. When I arrived home my wife, who had refused to allow me to touch her ever since I so easily allowed my truck to be taken from me, upon seeing me in my truck ripped the clothes from my body and ravaged me with a passion I had not seen in our 34 years of marriage. With my truck back, I took back my rightful place as the envy of all car driving males and the desire of every woman. Well, actually I pick my truck up in the morning, but I'm sure all that stuff will happen. Now, to make sure I get all my romance novels out of the back of the RAV4 before turning it in. The library wants them back.

Seems that parts are starting to show up. Maybe its not Toyota corporate trying to hide something, just pure unadulterated incompetence.

This makes sense. I told my teenagers all the time, when the were explaining to their mother and I "what went wrong", that the truth always makes sense. If what you are being told doesn't make sense then either you're not being told the whole story--or it's not true.

Their supplier was not properly torquing the nuts and Toyota's QC was not checking to ensure that they had been. So they just got tossed into production.

They need a prick like me to ride herd over this kind of crap; you can't do QC from a desk, you need to be out on the floor...

So on day 44, I picked up my truck. I finally gave up arguing on how much was drained. Repair invoice says it had over 2.0 liters. Per the SM, that's all they are allowed to say over or under 2.0. I know others posted exact amount on here. Course same guy told me they had two tacos held by two people with exact same first and last name and that's why they lost my phone number. Whatever dude. Don't believe a word you say. They did complete the SB for the shift feel enhancements on 16s after I complained when they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. It is smooth now :). And after telling me the paint could withstand the Sahara , they did the auto butler on it, which I believe they charge around $300 to add at time of purchase if I'm not mistaken. Paint is smooth as well. So it feels great to be back in the taco and return the Renegade and I will hold my breath that the differential is still good when the power train warranty runs out and that it truly was just a torque issue. I will not hold my breath on readily available parts though as mine was one of the first 25 out of 75 at my dealer and I understood they only got parts for the first 25 so far. The hostage lot still had plenty still sitting. Good luck for those still waiting. I thank you again for keeping me humored through this all. I will stay on the forum as a result and hope we don't see another recall like this one on the 3rd gen. And posting the parts replaced just as reference for anyone interested. Plus rental bill was listed at almost $1,200 on invoice for under $175 worth of parts

It could easily be a combination of factors that create a lot of variability. There are three factors involved...the flatness of the mating surfaces, the ability of the gasket to fill any imperfections, and the torque required to compress the gasket adequately. My guess is that Toyota designers know enough to design a system that works if it is within spec. If mating surfaces are out of spec due to manufacturing processes it is is possible that the fix could still be simply more gasket compression as long as the variation was not too great. This is all conjecture, but the big uncertainty they were dealing with was how much variability there was in parts that were already out the door (will more compression really fix this). I agree that it probably was a lot more than they expected. If I were running the program I would some some sampling of the trucks showing the worst leaks before rolling out the fix to everyone, which could account for the time it has taken. This is perfectly consistent with a flow chart of: if it is not yet leaking, it is probably close enough to spec to be addressed by more compression. If it is leaking, it is probably out of spec enough that it needs to be tightened well even more, hence new bolts. In manufacturing, make sure that new mating surfaces are within tolerances that greater compression will address and start torquing to a new spec.

Just a quick question. You can't change the main gasket without removing the axles correct?

That's correct, the axles have to be pulled and brake lines disconnected

I got mine back last night also. Turned it in on July 6th. I called the service manager yesterday afternoon and he said, "they had received a bunch of partial kits." So he asked if they could combine any of the partial kits to make a complete kit. Ding ding ding we have a winner. They worked on my truck for three hours, and I had it back. They also gave it a very nice detail, but I still gave it a Rejex treatment when I got home. Felt bad, because it sat in the AZ sun for so long. It drives just the same and it is nice to get rid of the Jeep Compass, but I can't say thank you Toyota like some others. I say FU to Toyota Executives for putting us all (including the dealerships) in this situation and giving us as little information as possible. I wish we could take Jim Lentz's cars away from him for over a month and tell him, "we don't know when you'll get them back." It's nice to have it back, but it has left a bitter taste toward Toyota. I think it made a lot of us look around at other options. I'm still going to follow this, because I'm not sure this isn't over with. I checked a neighbors 2017 OR and it has the weeping also.

Brought mine in on 7/7 for 15k service and they found rear diff leaking. They let me drive off and told me they were ordering parts. Called last week and still no parts... great. At least I'm not stuck driving some loaner, but still!

Interesting that some take 30-40 days and others are on day 60 with no end in sight.
