I have no issues with recalls if handled correctly. If anything Toyota has been too arrogant to step up and fix MANY of the issues we are seeing people complain about here daily. In the case of recalls they are mishandling them and leaving disappointed customers with trucks being confiscated for weeks or months on end.

When it comes to fuel economy every pound matters. Ford shaved a lot of weight from the previous generation, doesn't matter what that numbers compares to any other truck. The same f150 built with steel would weight more. It's as simple as that. Exactly why Chevy will be going the same route

That recall I linked to is for MY2014 trucks. I'm not sure I see how Toyota is being arrogant issuing recalls for MY2016 &17 trucks when clearly other manufacturers wait even longer. Bottom line is no manufacturer is going to issue a recall untill they have to.

I do agree that Toyota has handled the diff recall unbelievably poorly. People waiting months for a gasket is beyond bad. Hell, the frame recall for the poo generation is still going on.

My point being, I can only imagine the shit storm if Toyota had recalled 800k third gens.

They recalled more than half of all the third gens produced??? between a quarter million for the rear diff and another 32k+ for the cps.

It was a shit storm when Toyota recalled 310 tacomas because someone installed the wrong bolts for the airbag. 800k tacomas being recalled here would start a riot

What Smitty said. The price is about the same but the full size trucks are light years ahead of the mid size. The only advantage to the smaller truck is off road ability and maneuvering through tight trails. Honestly, my Yukon has a tighter turning radius than my Taco but I opted for the LB Taco.

I don't know if its more than half. Production numbers aren't out for 2017. But I get your point, it is a lot of them.

IMHO Chevy makes the best looking full size but Ford is a better truck so I vote Ford.

If you like carbon buildup due to blow-by, then go with the EcoBoost! I think it's crazy that Ford is too cheap to install a catch can...

If you want a reliable truck that won't win you any style points, but is still very comfy and has a bulletproof engine, go with the Chevy.

I'm biased if you can't tell.

HAHAHA. "Ain't" that the truth. If OP wants comments on Ford Or Chevys, he is on the wrong site. This is TW. No wonder he is so confused about what to buy.

I was lured to toyota/tacoma for its reliability also.....but what a engineering disaster this gen 3 has been !!
Must say though that my frame is not rusting, YET.

I reached the point where I needed a bigger truck and bought a used 14 F-150 Supercrew 4X4 about 15 months ago. I could have traded the then 9 year old Tacoma and gone with a new 2016 Ford, or keep the Tacoma as a 3rd vehicle and buy used. I decided the Tacoma was worth more for me to keep it.

I strongly considered a Tundra, but couldn't find a used one that met my criteria. After that I felt Ford was building the next best 1/2, and 3/4 ton trucks. I went with the 5.0 V8 and have been extremely happy with my choice.

Both the 3.5 Turbo and 5.0 V8 are good engines, but there are some misconceptions. Real world fuel mileage is about the same and if anything the V8 gets better fuel mileage. Especially when towing. That little V6 turbo does churn out serious torque at low rpm's. But when the turbos are running it sucks some gas too. Lots of guys are shocked at the poor fuel mileage when that engine is working hard. If you drive it very carefully and avoid using the turbo fuel mileage may match EPA ratings But... If you plan on towing over 5000 lbs, especially in mountains and over about 5000' elevation the turbo is by far the best option.

With lighter trailers weighing under 5000 lbs the 5.0 pulls just fine and will use less gas when towing than the V6. The HP and torque numbers aren't that much different, but it is where the torque comes in. The V6 turbo gets max power at 2500 rpm, the 5.0 at 3800 rpm. The 5.0 spends more time shifting to lower gears. As long as I keep rpm's around 3000 rpms when pulling hard in mountains my 5.0 runs great. If I ever let rpm's drop below 2500 it struggles.

The steel body doesn't really help fuel mileage. My 14 is the last of the steel bodies and if there is any difference in fuel mileage compared to friends aluminum bodies it isn't enough for us to measure. The difference is about 700 lbs more payload and towing capacity. Which is significant.

If you are planning to tow or load it heavy do your homework. Toyota offers very few options compared to Ford, and probably Chevy. The tow and payload numbers you see in the owners manual are pretty accurate. Ford offers 4 engines, 4 axle ratios and multiple other options. Choose wrong and you can easily end up with a truck that will tow less than a Tacoma. The numbers commonly seen are only for specific equipment not commonly seen. Realistic numbers will be much lower for most trucks.
