    Yeah I'm skeptical too.

Although my first diff took awhile to get loud and my second diff has been louder then the first from day one.

I get mine back tomorrow with a new diff. I bet it will still suck, and then I'm gonna sell the pos and drive my old ass 88 4runner. Which I will then later sell and be done with Toyota forever. Should have never left the Jeep world I've never has a single issue on 4 jeeps yet through 4 Tacomas they all had issues.... They are not any more reliable than anything else

I had a 1999 TJ. It was awesome. Not 1 problem. The gas mileage sucked but that was it.

I didn't think I had the howl until I read a comment that claimed the sound to be between 380hz and 450hz. I opened up a tone generator, located here http://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/, and the comparison is uncanny. I have the howl. It's not very loud, but it's there whenever I feather the throttle.

I guess I have a bit of reading to catch up on...

These are the same frequencies of your ring and pinion tooth mesh from 40-65mph (thereabouts).

Out of curiosity, are you saying that as these are the frequencies of the ring and pinion tooth mesh from 40-65mph that this sound is the result of normal operation? I don't agree or disagree, just seeking clarification on your comment.

To be honest, I'm not overly concerned at this point. I'm barely into any research on the topic, and I'm reasonably certain that in these types of threads that there is going to be bias in favor of there being a problem.

    Thanks!

Are these the ring and pinion tooth mesh frequencies? Yes.

Is this normal and ok? No Sir. These are absolutely not normal noises. Furthermore, neither Toyota, nor Toyota's supplier, Hino, has solved the noise problem yet. This is most usually due to a gear backlash or pinion depth issue. Actually the problem is over 2 years old, and Toyota is dismissing the issue as normal. Sadly, this is the first time Toyota misled the public though. If this is normal for Toyota, then it is time for Ford to produce a better normal and light the liars up.

My first rear diff had metal shavings with just 400 miles. I was told it didn't look good. The second is slightly quieter, but still pisses me off every time I go for a drive. Has anybody tried to lemon law these trucks because the rear diff? I had planned on driving this truck for a long time, but can see putting up witth this damn noise.

How about someone who was able to successfully Lemon Law their Tacoma start a new thread for that purpose only.

    1) If you were successful in having your Tacoma bought back by Toyota through the Lemon Law, go ahead and post.

    2) If you tried to force Toyota to buy the Tacoma back and failed, go ahead and post.

    3) If you haven't tried, don't post.
