Thoughts on why they are replacing the nuts/studs as well? Wouldn't they just ship out tons of gaskets to be used on the leaking ones to 'disassemble/reassemble'.

I agree with the three possibilities you suggest--perhaps I was too forgiving (not my norm) by putting forth that they only screwed up one of the three...

I have not really heard too much about studs being replaced. A few people have mentioned nuts and someone speculated that it might have to do with them having increased the torque setting (if that is even true). Maybe there was some problem that the original hardware was not holding the torque - dunno.

They are not replacing studs per the documented recall procedures, though I understand through anecdotal reports that some dealers have snapped and been forced to replace studs during the "fix" (I would first suspect human error in this, there are an awful lot of "I don't need no stinking torque wrench" so-called mechanics out there).:

Note: No studs on the required parts list, no procedure for replacing studs in the narrative.

I high-lighted the gasket part number, as it is the same p/n listed for my '09 in a parts list I downloaded in late October, last. I.e. it does not seem to be a "new" (as in redesigned) gasket, just a new gasket.

Also I believe the new differently marked nuts are to provide a quick verification of whether the gasket (and perhaps carrier) have been replaced.

Looks like I'm mistaken on the studs, and I follow on the nuts. Looks like I was mistaken about a few things esp if the gasket is the same part from '09. Just seems absolutely crazy things are taking this long!

Mine is an OR and is leaking as well. I took it into the dealership and they said a similar thing. They also said leaking with Tacoma's is "normal" and that people are just now freaking out about it since there's been that recall. WHAT??? Like sorry if that is a normal problem for Tacoma's than there is an even bigger issue here. How come I haven't heard of leaky differentials from 2nd and 1st gen owners? Toyota is too busy swimming in our money to care to fix the problem they started. Not very pleased

Some things never change. My father had a 1974 Subaru wagon that had leaking head gaskets, to be replaced under warranty (it was only 13 months old or so). A week later we went to pick it up and while he was doing the paperwork my curiosity got the better of me and I looked to see if they had to pull the motor (a "boxer", flat-four) to get the heads off or if could be done with the engine in place. Looking under the hood I saw a nice clean engine with some sort of red sealant visible along the head/block seams.

But then a quick peek underneath revealed that the motor hadn't been taken out as front-drive axles were obviously untouched, and that the underside fo the motor looked as one would expect with 22k New England miles on it--including the road dirt caked along the head/block seams--the bastards never pulled the heads; to replace head gaskets?

I pointed this out to my father (also an ME) and I could see the fire in his eyes as he went back inside.

The story they gave him: "They had two blue wagons needing head gaskets and must have done the other one twice."

He had a not-that-small manufacturing company at the time, with a lawyer sort of on retainer, a week later we went to pickup the brand new Subaru DL wagon...

I'm on day 104 without my truck and counting. I'm also on my 5th rental. My dealer said I was the first recalled truck there, so that means no one in NM has gotten theirs fixed yet Has anyone got their truck back with damage? Did the dealer fix the damage? I'm concerned my truck will need a new battery, my new TRD Pro 4 Runner wheels will be oxidized ( no clear coat on those wheels) and the paint will have water spots and other contaminates. With 104+ days in the NM heat and recent rains, I'm pretty sure my truck will not look the way it did when I dropped it off on April 29th. Pissed.

You haven't heard about it because it's normal...On older, much older vehicles, not on new just off the assembly line ones.
So yeah, tell them I said they're full of chit!

But seeping is quite common on ALL older vehicles and taken for granted because its not likely to drain the reservoir for a long, long time, years maybe.
You're also supposed to check all fluid levels now & then and top off.

If you look at a bunch of older vehicles, you're bound to see all types of oil seepage somewhere such as engine valve covers oil pans, power steering and on.

But just not on new vehicles!! NOT normal!!

That's what the big deal is, and they're missing it because its just a common seep, not to be confused with "normal" on a "new" vehicle.

    Stay unnormal my friends
    Cheers

Isn't that crazy? Do you remember when you were buying your truck? Part of the sales pitch was, "Let us tell you why you should buy from _________ Toyota." They sing the praises of their follow-up service to earn your business. It's nuts that we are avoiding the service dept. now. :annoyed:

"google" the gasket p/n shown in the recall parts list, 42181-0K030 and you get 827 hits.

Here is an outfit in Australia selling that same p/n for the 2005 to 2015 Hilux

    "google" the nut p/n 90170-08036 you'll get 151 hits...

Just like BSAs, Triumphs, and Nortons I guess--could be worse at least the electrics aren't made by Lucas¹...

Couldn't get ahold of anyone and eventually my call ended up with a director. Called back the next day and my normal Service Advisor said he was off-work on Wednesday (which I knew, no biggie) and since the Director got my voicemail he dug into my issue a bit more.

The "one part" they are waiting on is backordered into the THOUSANDS. I am #13 on the total list, apparently. They have no idea when the next round of parts will come in. Still told it could be 2 days or 2 months. What. The. Fuck.

Called my dealership today. Spoke to the person at the dealership that knows the most about this recall. He told me to expect early September. I see that parts are starting to roll in as more and more guys are getting their trucks in on this board, but I'm starting to think this is a regional thing and dealerships with the most recall trucks are definitely getting parts in first. My guy told me they haven't put out a tacoma from their dealership that's been repaired for the recall in a month and a half at this point.

I am Afraid so. With the OR's leaking from the diff and transfer case. Going to get way worse in my opinion.
