Does anyone know what the standards are for the emissions test here in NC? I know that it's county to county and I live in Durham so it's needed. I want to upgrade my exhaust to some headers (unsure if long or short), a urd y-pipe and probably an exhaust system/muffler. Will I pass my emissions test next year if I do it?

As long as you aren't throwing a code you'll be fine. That's been my experience

As long as all OEM EQUIPMENT like O2 sensors are there and "appear" to be working and passed a visual (blindfold) inspection and you do not have a current check engine light and all OBD2 readiness parameters are passed prior to inspection
Which means if you have check engine light on, you can't just clear it right before the inspection as the vehicle has to pass several readiness checks before it will allow inspection.

This, and you can't just take the bulb out either. It has to illuminate when vehicle performs self test also.

You would be seriously dedicated if you pulled your dashboard apart to remove the bulb just to pass emissions test. That might cost more time and money that it would cost to fix the issue

you would be surprised how often it happens and the fit that follows when you fail for it (never mind that the light was actually commanded on for a current O2 or EGR code which also caused a failure)

I absolutely hated doing inspections, i do not miss that crap at all !

    Seen it done before.

I've seen them come in before that someone prior to their ownership removed the bulb so there was no check engine light illuminated,
yet there were still DTCs in the system. It's also not common, but I've also seen bulbs that were bad.

DMV favorite is to send a vehicle in with the bulb removed, you miss it, $1200 fine to the tech that did the inspection

The list of things you cannot miss isn't terribly long, but the list of things you can be fined for not doing is.

The DMV inspectors sit across the street from shops and watch, they send in decoy cars, they come in undercover and try to get you to do shit to pass a vehicle, including bribery.

a shop i worked at would routinely use one vehicle to pass another, until they got nailed for VIN mismatch (scanned VIN on registration didn't match VIN in vehicle ECM, yes, they are encoded now, since about 2002)

@nastyneight so it looks like I have to fire on the range the week before the rendezvous, so I will most likely be heading up that Friday afternoon :/
