My Trans a Cooler With a Fan Install

hmmm. I can't get scangauge to show both trans temps at the same time. Temps seem to jump the same with either code honestly.

wonder if there is typo in that pic or on the Scangauge site: The TXD and RXD should both differ or just the RXD?

 

Not sure, I have an ultragauge. The people I've given those codes to say they work.

 

If they're the same ones I have, they work.

The code on the scan gauge site for ALT is wrong, it sends a request to the wrong place:
Use the screen print, those are the correct ones. It is the RXD - return code that has the info about temp, the TXD needs to be the same, it then displays the RXD info.

I've had both trans temps up for a year and a half.
TXT both need to be 07E02182. The site is incorrect. I tried to let them know - to no avail.

 

they updated the site. supposedly some subtle variation in code between different models using the codes.

 

2012 Tacoma Double cab long bed which has a factory tow package. We are planning to tow a travel trailer which loaded will weight around 3800 lbs. I felt the transmission cooler wasn't up to the job on a few trial runs in 90 deg + weather so I decided to install a larger one. I chose a Tru Cool 4589 which seemed to work well for the OP. I started to install on where the factory cooler was but then noticed that the air flow was restricted by the front plastic stuff as it hung too low. I switched to the other side like the OP had done. I bought 4 rubber vibration dampeners and had a short piece of 1/4 x 3/4 alum. laying around the shop, some 1/4-20 nuts and lock washers to bolt the dampeners on. Some #10 self tapping screws to attach the framework to the truck. Fairly easy assembly once I figured out where to place it. The factory kit has stuff to attach the cooler but suggests a more robust mounting for the larger coolers. Big thanks to the OP for his words and pictures, and a big thanks to the transmission Guru guy, hate to call him old cause I am.

Thanks. I'll have to look for a local option I guess. Ordered the same cooler you're running but skipped on the fan...figure if temps are still an issue with the larger cooler I'll look into a fan.

 

Pretty sure IPT has a proprietary trick that no one else has figured out yet.

You can ship yours to them. That's what most do. I'm just lucky to be local.

would you say its helped with the SC too?

 

Here's the thing with the SC. It can be good for the trans or bad. All depends how you drive.

If you're running around driving aggressively, it's going to make the trans slip all that much more. If it's slipping, it's making heat no matter what you do.

In my case, the SC allows me to pull my trailer up hills on the interstate without hunting for gears or going 40 MPH.

I can now pull hills in 5th without the trans immediately starting to hunt. Big hills I can pull locked up in 4th as fast as I want to go. Within reason of course. Before the SC, I didn't have enough power in 4th on a steep incline.

I'd say, watching the trans temps, keeping the TC locked up, and the IPT valve body are much more helpful than the bigger cooler. Although, the cooler helps too.

So, to answer your question, the bigger cooler is going to help with anything that would make the trans hot, such as driving hard with, or without for that matter, a SC. It's certainly not a miracle cure.

You can still easily overheat the trans if you don't pay attention to the temps.
