See, if you are going to change your oil too often, this is how/why you do it.

Mobil 1 has been crap for several years now. Especially in the shear/viscosity stability. I switched to Pennzoil platinum in my '04 WRX and had much better results. I believe they had a change of formulation back in the day. I forget the details, but I thought the dropped back from being a true group 4 as well. This after raising a stink with other oil companies for calling their < goup 4 oils "synthetic". Anyway...Ill use PP or most probably Castrol Syntec or any other synthetic before I touch M1 again.

yea mobil 1 isnt a group 4, its highly refined group 3 base stocks.

Ive never understood the fetish people have with Mobil 1.

This OP is cool. The only interval which I can see for which is not accounted for here is the oil itself becoming carbonized and eventually becoming carbon deposits within the heads/ piston tops due to less frequent oil change intervals.

Direct Injection is also notoriously known for carbon deposits. Audi's come to mind for some reason.

Calcium? It's a salt, and water soluble, but typical anyway evidently.

Technically - calcium is a metal. I don't remember materials that well from college, but when I went down the rabbit hole on my own Blackstone results, I found that it's used as a detergent for engine oils. 2000 ppm is typical and means the oil can continue to do the job of reducing deposits.

If I ever overhaul the engine, I'll definitely look for this.

Probably because it's used in stock sports cars like the Vette.

Because it's a consistent, quality, proven product that is available at every corner auto parts, convenience or mega store across the US at a great price. It's hardly the crap oil that some on the internet make it out to be. Change it and your filter every 7-10K miles like you should be and everything will be fine.

Mostly marketing. I think they use the same marketing firm that Ford uses.
