Anyone ever drill and tap Ball joints for a zirk?

I was wondering if anyone had drilled, tapped and installed zirk fittings on their steering, links ect.

THey come with fittings on the drive shafts, but none on the front end ( loved that my wrangler had them everywhere)

Anyone install one...?

 

I was just thinking about that today, it would make them last a lot longer. I remember my dad telling me about how back in the day they use to do it.

 

yea, older cars used to have them....not anymore...but you can drill and tap the back....and volia you've got clean grease at oil change time, they would last for YEARS

 

Good luck drilling and taping without contaminating it all in the process... it does suck they have so much planned obsolescence in our trucks! My old 1st gen Runner had zerks on the BJ's and it was still running the original ones at 256K...

 

I have a 19 yr old car with 295k on it. It still has all of its original ball joints- still tight like new. Not a single grease fitting on the car- not necessary.

I am old enough to remember grease fittings everywhere and still have one car with them. But, ball joints typically wear out from abuse (pot holes) and not from lack of lubrication. If you live in NYC you will not get ball joint life like you will if you live in TN and grease wont' change that- although it obviously won't hurt.

Hey, the mfgs would have to raise the price 50 cents if they didn't get rid of grease fittings.

 

i have them! lol not on my balljoints tho...

idk why too these things are a pain to replace...

 

A buddy of mine did it with his Dodge 2500 HD - he spent a full day doing it when the truck was brand new and 12,000 miles later they were all shot, likely due to metal shavings from drilling and tapping. I was thinking of doing it also but decided it wasn't worth the effort.

And besides that..... These trucks come with 'non servicable' ball joints.

If you add a zerk/grease, that grease isn't quarenteed to reach the areas (and/or uniformity) it needs because of the overall design of the balljoint.
