yeah man, I'm opting to just go, let em check it, do my 2 yr service, oil change
and inspection. If they find leaks, I'll sign the waiver and be back when they call
    that parts are in.

I went in this morning for my 10k. I checked before I left and saw no signs of any seeping. When they are done with the service the advisor tells me that they torqued the nuts but it needs the recall and it will be about 2 months. They offered me the option of a trac car or taking the truck. I opted to keep it and wait it out. At first Toyota mandated that every truck be held but I guess now the tech will tell them if it's bad to the point that the customer shouldnt drive it that long and they will push them into a loaner.
Didn't tell me which option was required, and I didn't ask, but I thought it was odd because they also didn't drain to check the level.
So I asked if they are waiting untill trucks come in to order parts or what? Basically Only so many parts can be produced daily, they are sent to the distribution centers, and then every dealer in that region gets an allocation every couple of days.
But again, if dealers are getting X number of full kits and Y number of partial kits every couple of days, how do they know what needs what if they havent verified it in advance what did they need.
It sounds like either at this dealer the Techs are just replacing everything to make sure they have a fat Christmas, or the dealers are screwing up the system and causing the delays by not following the procedure. Seems like the majority of the issue is with the dealers and not toyota.

One does not need to drain the axle to check the fluid level--just pull the fill plug and stick your "pinky" (the one on your hand) in...

32 days and i got the call that it was ready. The kits are slowly coming in. My location got 12 kits on Monday and since then were able to bang out all 12. My SA told me I was the 12th one so luckily im done. They are not sure when they will get more kits.

Out of curiosity, did you have a truck under the rear end recall?

If possible can the folks that have had the recall done check back in periodically? I'm curious if this remedy really does take care of this once and for all.

It would be completely pointless to get my hopes up only to find out later that people started having the same problem 3-5K miles later.

It depends on what was done per say. My invoice only states the same parts for nuts seals and gasket. But in reality they changed out the carrier (not entire axle) which leads me to believe they may have changed everything inside too. But again. Those parts are not listed and i can clearly see it's a new part bolted up.

I'm interested in all work done.
Doesn't matter if it was a complete carrier replacement or gasket and bolts.
If enough people check in I'll be able to sort out the data I'm looking for.

As I am saying beyond what I can see I can't tell you what the complete repair was if the invoice is only what they want to print on it.
I see what your trying to do and not trying pee on your leg.
So I got the new parts on the invoice plus extra, but how much extra?
The truck feels completely different. Like it should have been from the start. No major shifting flares and it holds gear a lot better. Still has the clunk when shifting from park or drive to reverse occasionally and had a little hard down shifting or axle wrap going from stop sign to stop sign when engine was a little cold. I would say most of it is corrected and only time will tell if it will last. On another note.
I looked in the back seat and the headliner above back sliding window has a nice water stain on it. Back to the dealer it goes for the loose 3rd brake light issue our trucks have. Yes... almost all of them have this problem. Heavy rain or going through a carwash will prove to much for it and leak like the minow from Gilligan's island.

I understood you, Pretty much what you just said is fine. I'm sure everyone's response is gonna be different one way or another.

On the 3rd brake light...you'll never escape that as long as you buy a truck. All the other truck manufacturers have this issue as well.

I've had mine back a week (300 miles). The diff shows no signs of any leaks. Drives the same as it always did.

Ok I went in today to have mine checked and the service guy told me his recall site was down so he couldn't check it. I showed him the site showing my truck had been recalled and he still wouldn't look at it. Told me too check back Monday and even if I had a leaky rear end they wouldn't hold my vehicle. Said "what's the worst that can happen we are replacing it anyways".

Why do you think all trucks leak, this is my 4th Tacoma and in 17 years not a drop.

Nor is my 2017 Tacoma leaking (although it was on the list). The Ranger I traded for it was also not leaking, btw.

If you read my post you'd see that I didn't say all trucks leak. You'd see that I said all the other manufactures have this issue as well.
That means that while not all trucks leak there is a somewhat common issue with people reporting it on their particular model. Google is your friend go fact check me.

Gotcha, i was just asking a legitimate question of your post as I've never had an issue, no reason to fact check.
