I've been considering buying and 08 PreRunner and during the test drive I noticed that there seems to be a lag after in acceleration after the pedal is pressed almost like a turbo lag. If a little throttle is giving the lag is not as noticeable. The engine has 178k and the supercharger was dealer installed at 10K. It has a full exhaust including headers and cat. Is this normal with the TRD supercharger and something I should be concerned with. Thanks.

Hmmm. Do you have any of the history for the truck? When was pm performed?Supercharger should be overhauled every 100k. Saying that boost really kicks in around 2k.

I don't know if the supercharger has ever been overhauled I with have to ask. I do know that he has kept the rest of it maintained. Something I will have to ask. Thanks.

Superchargers, unlike turbos, have no delay in supplying boost. You can have boost throughout the entire RPM range depending on throttle. That's one of the benefits of superchargers over turbochargers. If you're experiencing a lag in acceleration relative to throttle then there's another issue at play, probably unrelated to the supercharger. I'd start with basics like cleaning the throttle body, MAF sensor, check for proper fuel pressure, change the spark plugs if needed (should be running 2 step colder plugs with the supercharger), etc. Or have a shop do it.

Do you have a boost gauge?

Also, do you happen to have a check engine light on?

Take it to a mechanic to have it inspected before making any commitments. It could be the best 100 dollars you ever spend. Even if it was well maintained you would be amazed what a trained mechanic will find and its sure to uncover any gremlins hiding you dont see. Just my 2 cents from years of buying cars and trucks.

I'm aware that lag is not associated with a supercharger thus my concern especially with that many miles. Once boost comes on it pulls very hard. The truck does not have a boost gauge. It is not mine so this would have to be done if i purchase it or as part of it.

Idk... going sc is a rabbit hole. Lag is odd for sure. You could end up chasing that lag for awhile and quite a few dollars. Or you could rebuild it, upgrade the fuel pump (just to rule that out), add a ucon and you'd probably be fine.

There is a check engine light indicating a bad 02 sensor right side bank 2. He said that a scanner does not indicate an issue and believes its due to the new exhaust.

Once again its not mine just considering a purchase so I don't want to buy a money pit. Thanks.

Honestly, I'd probably pass. If you want a sc I'd buy a different truck and put a new one on it. Just too many unknowns.

Just to be clear... You're not associating the "lag" that comes with the truck hunting for the right gear when you mash the skinny pedal to a lag in power right? This lag comes on after the truck has found the proper gear?

S/c's deliver instant power. Are you sure it's not the transmission lagging? If the 08 s/c is anything like the first gen is there a one way iac valve? I know on the first gen without it it'll give a sort of hiccup.

A supercharged Tacoma is a money pit no matter what lol. At least if you put it on yourself or buy one with a detailed history on a cleaner truck, it'll be a mostly 'for fun' money pit.

I have a love/hate relationship with mine, most of the hate is felt at the gas station.

No this happens at any speed. If given partial throttle to bring up revs it's not there. There is defendant delay before the power comes on. I first noticed it on a first gear roll out.

It has a very detailed service history and has added many options to it.

Looks clean, I'd ditch those ugly wheels/tires though but that's me lol. Really the only thing that's a red flag for me is that check engine light, I wouldn't trust that it's 'just the exhaust'...the O2 code could be from the s/c running too lean or too rich, or it could be the exhaust. If they'd be willing to drop the price for the sake of needing to properly diagnose and fix the CEL it could be a good deal.
