Help me choose a new AT/Highway Tire

I had good result with the BridgeStone Dueler A/T Revo2 on my old Grand Cherokee... quite and smooth ride. My buddy loves his Michelin ltx.

 

They're great highway tires and have sand/Rock/packed soil capabilities...mud/clay is a no go

 

Agreed. I found that out firsthand in mud and sticky clay. What makes Michelin stand out, and I say this almost every time I post about them, is that they use a single piece mold when making their tires as opposed to several pieces/sections. This results in a more consistently round tire with fewer balance issues. As far as I know they are the only major tire manufacturer still making tires this way. I know they were doing this as recent as a couple of years ago so assume they still are.

 

Michelin in general (any class tire) is considered a top tier tire. I just wish they made a more aggressive AT tire

 

Oh, they are clearly the best tire to me. I agree about the AT tires though - they need far more aggressive options but Continental is the same way (apart from owning General).

 

Aren't the Kevlar Goodyear tires on the TRD Off Road models? Too aggressive??

I 2nd that, I'm trying to get rid of the set I have currently my CRV. They just plain suck. Matter of fact I thought I heard they don't make them anymore????

 

I think that you are right. Some people were suggesting them but I cannot find them from major tire retailers.

 

Goodyear Wrangler Adventure with Kevlar. Discount Tire Direct has them. They are not a very aggressive tire but they are standard on the OR and Pro models. They are a very quiet tire to me and ride well. I just want ant something with more a more aggressive tread design.

 

I was talking about the BFGoodrich Rugged Terrains, which some of us believe that were discontinued.

There are plenty of aggressive tires in the market.

I've had three sets of the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus and had great luck w/ them. I'm probably going to stick w/ those or maybe switch to the Michelin Premier LTX tires depending on what deals are out when I need to replace mine. It would be hard to talk me out of the Bridgestone tires, though, as they have been great on all the vehicles I've had them on.

 

My dad bought those from Costco for his 4Runner and 20k miles later they are still holding great too. The only gripe that I have about them is that they are super stiff compared to some old Michelin LTX M/S2s that I had in my old 4Runner.

Yep, it was the Rugged Terrains that were replaced with the Rugged Trails.

 

I don't disagree that they may be a bit stiff, but they've been great driving through some torrential downpours on trips for the holidays and never lost grip to the road. I've loved them, but I'm not as fussy and the stiff ride does not bother me as much as it might bother someone else. I was going for long tire wear, safe (they are on my wife's car), and relatively smooth ride on the main roads. They've served all three rather well in my opinion.

 

Currently enjoying the ride on the Falken AT3. Like the idea of it having a 55,000 mile warranty. Off road they have done well on steep loose baby head scree fields. Highway/City miles are quiet. Like the tread design for winter. Usually on BFG and Hankooks. Had he best price point too.

 

The Michelin Defender LTX M/S have a 70,000 mile warranty.
The Bridgestone-Dueler H/L Alenza Plus have a 80,000 mile warranty.

 

Yep, figure the 55,000 was on the higher end on a more aggressive A/T tire than most. Thought I'd throw it out there if you wanted something in between. Good luck.

 

Cooper AT3 or ATP (if you want something a little more aggressive).

I had ATRs and they were alright. Had some weird cold-weather characteristics. Nothing that would be a problem for you in SoCal, though.

 

The AT3 beats some of the ones on your list that are at 50,000 miles. Of course depends on how you drive with them. We'll see if mine make it that far. I personally like the thickness of the tread for small road hazards I cant see. I've picked up screws that never made it all the way through. If you're looking for mileage specifically then go with those you mentioned. They will obviously be quiet but lack the A/T traction which you may not need. Had Revos at one point too, but felt the rubber was too hard (long tread life) for the ice and snow conditions when I lived in Crested Butte, CO. Sent me sliding slowly on hard-pack snow/glacier when offroad.

 

I can vouch for the 80,000 miles on the Bridgestone Alenzas... I was at least at 70k and the only reason I replaced was I had a nail in one tire that was too close to the side wall to repair. So, I just replaced all four, but still had a good bit of tread left. That second set is still going strong on that Acura that I sold to my niece and working on set #3 on the wife's Honda Pilot. I've put at least 20k miles on the Honda and I can't really tell if I've lost any tread.

I'm not saying that those Michelin tires are not good tires... know a few folks around here that have them and like them. I've just had such good luck w/ these Bridgestone tires that I really don't want to switch. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
