It looks to be to the metal. I'm looking for advise to fix/repair and prevent rust from starting.

    Thanks in advance!!!

    Nothing yet...
sand it down immediately and put plastidip on it until you can have it properly fixed.

Touch up paint and blob remover. Blob the paint on and let it cure for 12 hours minimum. Not joking about letting it cure. Then take your blob remover with cloth and card and then lightly rub until the blob is flush. Langka is the kit I use.

This photo is from about 3 inches away. Any further and you cannot see it. This chip was there the day I took my truck home. I fixed it with this method and this is from today. Still perfect a year later.

A bottle of touch up paint or taping off and using some clear coat in a can is about your only option as an easy fix.

Bummer. What about, after touch up paint, applying a 3M type door guard film to the edge? Even if you had to have a detailer do it for you, it shouldn't be much and it may hide the scratch and will help with future protection.

I wouldn't do this unless you are going to paint the whole panel. Never sand down a scratch you're going to "touch up", only sand down if you are going to use a spray gun / can, and that scratch doesn't warrant a spray fix. Plus plastidip won't stop rust, it may delay rust for a period of time but it won't stop it over time.
Slight nuance to my statement about not sanding on a "touch up" fix, if you have a small BB size dent then sanding may be warranted if you stick wet N dry to the end of a pencil erasor (or something that size). But again this doesn't apply here.

Automotive touch up paint company. Have your color ID written down and order it online. Excellent company with very good color match results. Do put clear coat over the color touch up.

The bottom tip of my door scraped some rocks after I tried to open it to see how I got stuck (surprise it was those same rocks).

I just got a $12 bottle of touch up paint, some alcohol and a rag to clean it up. It was a 5 minute job. Mine was in a much less noticeable spot though. I was more worried about rust than aesthetics.

There was a great thread about how to fix a scratch, with places to buy paint, a really detailed write up application and finishing - that I did not bookmark. I now need that thread because I managed to put a nice gouge in the door paint but no dent and not down to the metal.

Anyone point that one out to me again? Thanks
