Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

Thanks, that's about what I was figuring.

 

I would likely be trading in just over a year so probably into an '18. I have a manual so even if I only have the tune for a year or so the difference should be worthwhile. Can't stand the rev hang...

Also, depending on how all the new safety stuff is integrated I may just but mine.

 

No Rush but is their an estimated date for 1.02?
A few weeks or a month? Maybe more?

I know how it feels. I've been watching this tune develop from the very beginning. At first it was only 12 guys that got it. As soon as OV put the tune back on his site I jumped. Then he closed it down again. He has been playing catch up ever since he opened up the order again. I know you will be happy once you finally get your dongle in your hand. Then you will be asking for 1.02

 

Eagerly waiting for more info and experiences to pop up in here before I order, still not 100% sold on the safety and reliability based on the posts in here, no one has done a real, long write up on it yet (it feels like, maybe someone has?).

Still not entirely sure what 1.01b actually gives. "makes the truck drive better" isn't much help, wanting actual 'It does this which translates to this'

This isn't a negative post, it's my own unknowns.

 

Are you asking someone to go back and dig up all that info from this thread and put it into a cute package, that info is in here. Lots of reading bullshit though

Interested.. Might want to add to spec whether you can turn on/off the learning mode so it holds the settings.. This seems to be the problem in when I get reflashed and cruises up the hills and drives awesome right after reflash, then goes back to gear finding on the hills after a couple weeks..

I am actually curious to hear from owners of the tune on this topic b/c while I'm now patiently (sort of) waiting for this to hit my doorstep, that has been one of my lingering concerns - that the ECU will continue to relearn bad driving characteristics independent of the tune. So - tuners, have you noticed any degrading of quality in your driving experience a couple of weeks after flashing?

 

I know it's a very very long thread but OVTune's described in quite a bit of detail throughout what was done and there are quite a few reviews of both 1.01a and 1.01b which outlines driving characteristics and resolutions noted. OVTune is very busy right now not just on Tacoma stuff but also on a lot of other platforms I see him posting on facebook for...so it's in all of our best interest if you either wait for those of us with pending orders to get ours and give you the reviews you're looking for, or do some legwork on your own to find the answers you're looking for so that OVTune doesn't have to take the time to rehash topics already covered for everyone that's in your position.

 

I can outline what is adjusted in the 1.01B tune it's mostly the same as 1.01A (with exception to details on the "stutter" adjustments)

Also we are quickly trying to wrap up any last things we have to do on other platforms ( like some nissan stuff ) so we can focus more towards this specific platform and ECU type (P5 Toyota).

With that, we want people to understand there is no rush to get a kit at the current moment. We should finally be fully caught up by the end of this month and have our new tuning kit case but we want people to know we are going to be around. This isn't a limited time deal. Consider that I have been doing toyota tuning since late 2015, this is the first platform that we are developing a fully functional datalogger for. So it is only going to keep getting better.

As far as the shifting "memory" I can make it where the truck "learns" only 1 mode and it will be consistent with every time you start the truck, but I am not sure how popular this would be, as part of the reason there are others is so that it can "learn" your driving and make it more comfortable to you.

Thanks Mat. Good to know it could at least be an option. I love the "sound" of a learned driving experience that "feels right" for my driving style, but haven't seen that occur with the stock program. Perhaps by fixing some of the messes in the tune, maps, shifting will help it learn more effectively. I'm definitely hoping it will learn in a positive way, but I love that there is an option to turn the learning off if we find we love it when we flash but not after it's gone to school for a little while

One thing I find is that if I'm driving all highway / mountains and out of the city after a reset, it learns really well and I enjoy how it adjusts. What it doesn't seem to handle very well is adaptation. If I don't leave the city for a couple of weeks and then head out of town, the only way I can describe it is that it seems to want to shift the way it would if I was driving in stop/go traffic until I drive it a few days (which I normally don't before returning to the city). So after a bit, I either reset the short-term via battery disconnect or drive in S to take the learning out of the equation.

But, when D is working properly I get smooth shifting and 20mpgs in the city vs. 18ish when I mess around with S and/or ECT.

Actually I think the way you are explaining it is a better explanation. It's not "learning" but it's trying to "adapt." however, everyone reading must realize this is nothing more than layers of torque maps with different values that the ECU shuffles through. The ECU cannot truly "learn how you drive" but it can shuffle maps based on speed and load. For example the person who makes 2 mile commutes and never fully warms up the car, there is a particular "shuffle" for that. Or the person that likes to floor it stop light to stop light, there is a "shuffle" for that. It can "learn" which map best suits what you are currently doing or were doing, by shuffling to a different map. This is in all of toyotas new logic / software architecture and it is meant to "enhance" the drivers experience and comfort.

Turns out a lot of people hate it, because it gives the driver less freedom of control and you never really know what the vehicle is going to do. it's not just the Tacoma, it's in the Camry, LC500, LC500H, IS200T, NX200T, RC200T, Etc etc etc.

I for one, hate it. I prefer it to drive predictably and my foot does the adapting.

 

Been following this from day 1, I'm hinging my decision on buying a 2017 AC based on the results, is that messed up? I drove a few ATs and one MT and was not impressed by the throttle response, love everything else about the truck though

 

not messed up. i wouldn't have kept the truck if i didn't get results from the Pedal Commander before getting this tune. now with the tune i don't need the Commander, but without a somewhat responsive motor I'm not interested in driving (or fighting with) the vehicle. with this tune: no fight.

 

That right there is already promising!
