The Overseas Highway is one of, if not the single Best drives in all of the US. The colors of the water mixed in with the small key makes for an awesome experience. You just need to enjoy that once you leave the mainland, things move at a different pace.

You can also read up on Henry Flagler's overseas railroad... built near the turn of the 20th century between Miami and Key West. It was the ONLY way aside from boats to get from the mainland thru the keys to KW. Much of the old trestle system (no longer used) is also in place as you drive down.

I was there in April and highly recommend:

It's a great way to get away from the KW crowds, see the surrounding mangrove islands and beautiful sandbars. You can snorkel, fish, nature watch, or just hang out all day on a sandbar. Captain Ally is a wonderful host. We hope to make it back again for another trip with her.

I was drunk for like a week straight when we went earlier this year. Getting on that plane was pretty difficult and not because of having to walk on the tarmac or the alcohol. I loved that place. We stayed at Parrot Key Resort.

Same place we stayed a few years ago. I'm a huge Hemingway fan so... rented jet skis and toured the island. Fishing charter. Drinking. More drinking.

We kayaked the mangroves & around the island, went snorkeling/dolphin watching, went to the Hemingway House and did other touristy stuff. I have to say kayaking was probably the best part even considering that was only the second time I've kayaked. The people watching was pretty spectacular also lol. I can't wait to go back again.
