My initial thought but it's a lot lighter brown color. I was leaning bull or rat snake varient.

 

That's them. I am surrounded by them. We have diamondbacks too so we never assume.

They like my garden, but know not to mess with BFT because he will eat them.

 

Ya same here an the length threw me off.

 

Why? Is it longer than 2'? I've not seen one any longer than that. Could also be that as they get older they find better haunts away from people.

All the ones I see are between 12" and 24".

 

I'm surrounded by garter an bullheads. Huge pasture behind my house they like to creep around after I mow.

 

Looks longer I've seen rat snakes around 4ft before an thick as a baseball out hunting before.

 

Probably right around 24"

 

We've seen some 4 footer rat snakes in our yard at times. Scary to walk up on

 

Yes indeed I always just walk around them on the backside don't wanna take any chances. Don't like taking any animals life unless for food or immediate threat.

 

Rat snakes can get big - we'd have 5 footers on base at Offutt. Garter/garden snakes tend to top out a 2 to 3 feet.

 

Same with the snakes. Usually leave them be if I can id them.

 

Last week baby calls and says

" I just saw a big black snake!"

I said "as long as its not trying to get in your pants, shouldnt be an issue"

She laughed, I laughed. Good times

Worked at a bombing range in NC we had to worry about water moccasins eastern dimondbacks,black bears an this most of all.

 

My in-laws had a nest of coral snakes under their barn. They went away when the neighbor with the chickens moved.

Corals are usually harmless because A) they want nothing to do with people and B) have to chew on you to envenomate.
