Got the firebox on the smoke chamber after I added some legs.

    This puppy needs wheels!

Ill get some pictures of some of the more glamorous welds as well as some of the scat that I laid down.

This is my first big fab project. I welded some sliders onto my truck and a couple mufflers for my lady and pops, but this takes the cake as far as projects go.

Skid plate in the works next, but thats mostly bending metal to form.

P.S. Credit to https://www.youtube.com/user/underthehood1000 this guy. I based my build off of his video's, a popular mechanics DIY smoker article, and the tools I have available.

I had better learn to weld well soon. So much grinding. :bananadead:

Here are two of the nicer welds I laid down.

    CE99B769-09A3-495A-91A1-EB2C3DC58CAC.jpg

This is some of the worst:anonymous: blew a hole through and attempted to hot glue it back together:notsure:

Not exactly sure how to fix holes, I guess don’t make them to begin with?

    DBC69255-8364-4D38-A438-868ACC62111F.jpg

Found this one a couple joints upon grinding them down. This weld didn’t penetrate?

    F84EABDD-1C6A-4307-86DC-59C32A780581.jpg

It’s on wheels and I stuck some nuts on the other feet with carriage bolts as adjustable legs. Probably going to add some feet to the bolts too.

This project is kind of kicking my ass ahah! I’m learning everything as I go and it feels like slow progress, but it is coming along.

The trick is knowing what your doing when it all goes well.

Then keep repeating that sequence of events .

If things get to hot stop before you burn through.

Nothing says you have to weld one long seam all at once .

Heat always builds as you approach the corner or as you get closer to the top in vertical up welds

When I'm welding 2 thin pieces at a right angle, I just weld the inside and grind the outside down to knock down the sharp edge. Butt welding outside of corner pieces is difficult no matter how thick the iron.

Regardless, your welds are coming along just fine. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

I'm glad you took time to grind down the welds and found you had no penetration. Knowledge is power.

If you blow through allow the material to cool slightly, turn down your machine a little and you can "tack" in wire to give some backing to the hole, then run over at the higher settings and then grind to inspection.

    Thanks for the feedback, guys.

The weld that didn’t penetrate has me worried about a few of the welds in my sliders. Maybe in the spring I’ll clean them up.

Looks to me like the weld that you think didn't penetrate is that you ground the weld off fully. Looks like the steel is just lapped together.

@jjsul any time you are putting two pieces together, set it up like the one on the left. Looks like you did it like the right one?20170815_224024.jpg

    Shouldn't you bevel the inside?

Its not pipe welding. Just mild steel bracket construction.

I was speaking in general. I thought it ended up being stronger.

With iron positioned like the pic on the left, it is a beveled weld site. You just didn't use a grinder.
