Yeah that was an awesome trip. There are a handful of places you can drive on the beach on the east coast. Even less places you can camp on the beach, (i mean on the beach, not behind the dunes where it's all buggy and nasty) and Cape Lookout is one of the very few where you can do both (the only one I know of offhand)

We backed the trucks up right to the high tide line and set up camp. You can make campfires below the high tide line so they'll wash away the next morning. It was a fantastic trip, one of the most memorable I've done.

There are two options, North Core Banks and South Core Banks. We did South. The trickiest part is getting there. There are one or two private ferry companies that run a few trips a day and you have to reserve a spot well in advance as the ferries only hold 4-6 cars.

I was under the impression that there were no services at all on the island. The website says they don't even have dependable fresh water, not to mention fuel/food/ice. So we brought everything we could need, dry ice for the coolers etc. I found that at the ferry landing on the island, however, there was a small store with ice and gas right near the "rustic cabins" that you can rent. I never went into the store but there was definitely a gas station and ice there. I assume there were various snacks and necessities inside. You'll need to pack out all your trash and shit in a hole in the dunes or bring a portable toilet, etc. Typical primitive camping. Highly recommend a solar shower to wash off after a dip in the ocean. And bring lots of fresh water.

We went on Labor Day weekend, a busy time, and where we made camp there wasn't anyone in either direction as far as the eye could see. The place is mecca for shore fishing so you can expect a few guys to pass your way heading to the fishing spots. The rangers drive up and down the beach every morning looking for turtle nests and close off sections of the beach when they find them so you need to drive on the access road behind the dunes in spots where it's closed. There are no paved roads on the entire island.

There's a neat old area with a lighthouse you can tour and such down on the southern end of the island. There is a passenger ferry that brings people out to the lighthouse and there are bathrooms and a museum and stuff there.

My truck was bone stock when I went and I had no issues. If you get properly stuck and need a tow it would be enormously expensive I'm sure. And likely wouldn't reach you in time if you got stranded below the high tide line considering it's a few hours by the time you line up the ferry and such. So use your head, air down, don't be an idiot, and respect the place by taking all your trash with you and not trampling the dunes etc.

There is no permit required for beach camping. And no beach driving course to take. Just need to pay for a ferry ride there/back.

Unfortunately I no longer have a GC. I used to have a JDM STI swapped 2000 2.5rs. It changed hands and ended up over at Mach V where they gutted it and turned into their shop track car and gave it the life it deserved.

My fiance drives and FRS so there is still some Subaru in my life. I'll get another one day and do it up properly.

There are a lot of members around here (including myself) who love to wrench on trucks and will install your lift for you for the price of some pizza.

so, while not strictly truck related, theres a Rallycross Event happening this upcoming sunday at the Allegheny county fairgrounds in Western Maryland. its free to come spectate, and the group that comes out is super friendly and most (myself included) would be more than happy to let folks ride along with them. were also whores for pictures of our cars, so if youve got a photography nut they are more than welcome to come out and shoot the crap out of us. Facebook event link for more info here ill be there with my Focus, but if youve got a beater car you more than welcome to bring it out, this venue should be really smooth so it wont destroy your car if you dont go full Colin Mcrae with it.

:gossip: would have posted this here earlier but i kinda forgot about this thread :anonymous:

not just the dirt track, the course is also running into the infield and staging lanes, so were gonna have everything from hard pack dirt with rubber to loose clay to gravel to asphalt. its gonna be crazy.

Do it. We all love pictures. And there should be a shit ton of opportunities to shoot from all angles. The only catch for photography is they wont let you hold a camera and ride along with someone, but the video from that is usually shit anyway so its not a big loss.
