For your on ground sleeping duties, get some self inflating sleeping pads. GF and I both used these from Lightspeed outdoors and had our mummy sacks on top of them. It'll help if you can muster up that last bit of air from your lungs to give them that little extra bit of cushion by firming them up a bit more. They are self inflating, but adding the bit of firmness goes a long way. I'm 5'8" 180lbs and had no issues with feeling the ground while on these in the dirt.

I bought one from costco and one on AMZ, but remember I paid ~$52 for each.

They roll up and come with a storage sack.

The two fit perfect in our little 3P backpacking tent..

 

I'm interested in the same thing. The only problem is you still got bedding after you set up the tent.... that will slow you down some.... especially on tear down.

 

I was thinking piecing together yoga mats or something similar where you could just roll up and provide some cushion and then have a summer season sleeping bag.

 

We've done the yoga mat route since we have some. You'll go numb on irregular ground surface due to the pressure points generated.

 

I'll second the Kodiak tents.

Very roomy inside, very durable, and hold up to weather well.

 

I've been very happy with my Big Agnes and Sierra Designs tents. Both have been tremendous in prolonged hard rains.

I go back and forth on ground pads. A cabelas outfitter self inflating pad if I don't mind the bulk, otherwise a thermarest neo air. Neo Air can be noisy though.

Life in a tipi is a life worth living.

 

With a ground tent you still get to roll up sleeping bags, sheets, pillows.....With a RTT (If I understand correctly), just hop out and collapse the tent with all that bedding waiting to be slept in when you get it back out.

I'm just looking at the "speed" part of it.

 

My winter sleeping gear (below 35). Two king pillows, two 40 degree down bags, 3 military wool blankets. All stay inside my RTT while traveling...so easy.

 

REI Kingdom 6 for car camping ground tents! is very roomy and has a decent sized vestibule. half of the tent is also no see-um mesh, so on clear nights you can remove the fly and stargaze without having to worry about insects/mosquitos.

I used to have the Kodiak Tent, but returned it because the PNW is wet for a majority of the year, and the material for that tent is canvas, which means if it is a little wet, you have to dry it out somewhere before packing it away, or else it will get moldy.

 

X2 for Big Agnes. Paco Pads are pretty sweet to sleep on if money/space isn't an issue. Plus the dogs wont pop them.

 

I have a Eureka Copper Canyon 6 and cots for car camping. I got a screaming deal from Dick's Sporting.

Get cots though, seriously. I struggled with all kinds of mattresses and I've found cots to be comfortable and bulletproof.

Also I've never had an air mattress last more than a season without springing a leak*.

*except for my big agnes backpacking 2" air mattress, thing is a beast. I've had really good luck with all things big agnes. Tents, sleeping bags, and mattress' they're just pricey.

 

+1 on the cots. Just be aware: Since the cots are open underneath, it can get pretty cold. Might still want a mattress underneath you for insulation.

 

If money is no object, Exped Megamats are great for car camping. They're too comfy but are pricey.
