The universal parts for the "gasket has to be replaced, i.e. the carrier assembly/axle housing joining is showing any leakage (see below) are the gasket and 10 nuts.

Parts list from the June 15, 2017 SAFETY RECALL H0G document:

    The gasket (p/n 42181-0K030) is $6.44:

    The nuts (p/n 90170-08036) are $1.08 each:

So it's a whopping $17.24 (online) for the base parts needed for any leaking differential repair.

I do not know if www.toyotapartsdeal.com has them in stock, it would be interesting for someone with a confiscated 3rd gen to give them a call and see--and if so buy them and bring 'em to their dealer...

Yes, signing the waiver means you have accepted liability and they now have a document you signed, clearly indicating that acceptance. And it gets worse as from that moment on any loss you might suffer that can even be remotely tied to the recall (and anything else that the waiver lists) will end up in litigation or more likely remediation.

If I had a 3rd gen "on the list" and it was just misting/weeping a bit I would check the fluid level just to be sure (that should take 5 minutes or so; I would also check the torque of the fastening nuts) and then just drive and monitor the situation. It could mist/weep almost forever and not lose enough gear oil to matter; one liter seems to be a magic number. If a liter of gear oil leaked out it would make a god-awful mess that one would not have to look too hard to see (or smell, though the synthetic stuff doesn't seem to stink as much as the dino juice).

Well....... just heard back from my service adviser. Just like he promised I will be getting my truck back today. Very happy about that....and I appreciate him sticking to his word.

He told me technicians reviewed and verified the seepage points I saw on the rear diff. Because my TRD OR is not on the recall list they are handling it as warranty work as I had hoped. They then checked the fluid level of my diff today and said it is still way over spec so he told me no worries....keep driving as normal with no restrictions on use what so ever. He then informed me that the parts needed are (as everyone has stated here) on back order so they put in an order and will call me once they arrive to schedule an appointment to bring the truck back for install. When I asked how long till the parts get in he said with the recall it could be 2 weeks to 2 months he had no idea.

When I asked how many Tacomas they are holding because if this he said they have 7 waiting for parts in the secure lot. He also indicated only one person has elected to sign the waiver to take their vehicle until parts arrive.

I think the key in my case not having an issue with them wanting to keep my truck is the fact my VIN is not on the recall list. Handling it as regular warranty work seems to have made the difference here...along with the fact that my seepage is not severe. As he indicated in days past the seepage I have would have been considered normal and they would have done nothing to it. But with the recall going on, Toyota is erring on the side of caution and putting in new gaskets and fluids if any seepage is seen. My Nissan Xterra weaped from the rear diff for all 17 years I had it....never had a problem with the diff in all that time. That was my experience anyway.

Best of luck to everyone that is still waiting to get their truck back. I will report back when my parts actually get in.

So I want my transmission Software update, an oil change, and entine update, but can't take it in if I don't want them to 1) keep my vehicle because they'll inspect the transmisssion and see the slight dark spot or 2) sign a waiver that releases them of all sorts of liability?

The picture being painted sounds like I shouldn't go to the dealer for any of the above if I don't want to wait weeks without my taco or sign away liability....

Cried enough to Toyota so they put me in a Ram 1500 rental. Covering 60 a day for a truck. Hope my parts come in soon still. Day 35

I just checked for leaks, weeps, seeps, drips, etc. One month after being torqued for recall. All is well! :burnrubber:

Except they're NOT just in time, they're late by months.

Right, the Just In Time process is the root cause of the parts arriving so late. They only make enough parts to support what is on the assembly line so that they don't have to carry any inventory.

Well, lets see, in first year of ownership of my Taco: dripping fluid on the ground, check, electrical problems, check and double check! Of my god, I bought a British Lorry! In just a year and a half, my truck has been out of commission for almost three months. None of my old Brit bikes have been down that long, and I have owned a bunch in 49 years of riding. The longest was just a month and a half, and that was a complete overhaul, custom paint and custom fabricated parts. I am trying to laugh, but when I see some have had their trucks down for over 100 days, I just can't help but wounder, what happened to Toyota?

All organizations reach a stage in their development where the process of doing what they do becomes the all consuming task; displacing actually doing what they do to a secondary, tertiary or even lower level. Tactics and strategies devised to combat specific issues become embedded and immutable policies that live on long after the issues they were design to resolve have ceased to exist--and often become impenetrable roadblocks to the development of new tactics and strategies to deal with new problems.

The Federal Government is undoubtedly the best empirical example of this descent into incapability and impotence ...

I called the Toyota Dealership where I originally bought my vehicle (an hour outside of town). They are way more relax/cool about the procedure for fixing the vehicle and will let me take it back w/o signing squat.

:bananadance:Just got a call from my dealership and they said my parts are in. When I took mine in initially for the recall they said "yep it's leaking" and we will order parts and call you when they come in. Then sent me on my way. No hijacking of my truck.

unfortunately, they won't order the parts until you go in. so no matter if you wait now or wait later, you still have to wait. might as well get it done now.

Anyone can tell me if having the technician put Silicone in replace when changing the diff is better than the part it's suppose to have? Mine is an off road with minor seeping so they finally called me in to have it change. Few hours after waiting my SA called me they had 1 wrong part I believe the gasket or what but was told they can replace it with silicone and supposedly should be better. Any of you guys had this? What's your thought on if?

I would not want RTV, you could always ask them to get the correct gasket as that is how it comes from the factory
