Not going to happen, right? Even with the Colorado Duramax selling well and the 2019 Ranger likely having a diesel option? You don't think Toyota will be worried about being left behind as the mid-sized truck that can't get 30 MPG?

I'm in the market and a diesel Taco would EASILY win me over, even with an expected price premium. I have concerns about Chevy overall quality and I don't like the Colorado's infotainment system, but am otherwise attracted to the duramax for MPGs and towing over mountains.

Just posting here to make sure my dreams are in vain.

Get the Ram Eco diesel for towing and Mpg's. You'll be old and grey waiting on Toyota put out a diesel.

Did you test drive a duramax? If the Colorado interior and exterior didn't look like a minivan id consider it. It drives much better than my 2016 Tacoma...shifting, low end Torque, throttle response. All better.

I would like to see a Canyon diesel in person.

If I were a serious off roader, I'd get a ZR2 in a heartbeat for a lot of reasons. Diesel, multimatic suspension and lockers are 3 big ones.

Look at the problems that Volkswagen and FCA had with their diesels. Toyota will put in a Hybrid before they bring a Diesel to North America.

An electric Taco would be awesome but that's a non starter too.

I'd be all over a hybrid Tacoma in a hot second. I'm genuinely surprised there isn't already one.

Maybe they are waiting for the mid cycle refresh to introduce it. That would be around the time that the Ranger and the Jeep truck will be out to market.

If Toyota really took the time to do it right, and market the hell out of it, I think a hybrid Tacoma would absolutely huge for them.

Hasn't Toyota already released the 2018 Tacoma specs for CARB?

Toyota wont even change out their shitty leaf springs. What makes anyone think they'll change the motor before 2026?

Thanks, guys. Passing out popcorn all night long! I did search for this first. Was actually surprised how buried the conversation about the chatter of a Taco diesel was within threads. Not to mention how bad the search UX is in forums like this (not just tacomaworld.com. Most of these old forum UX are notoriously bad for easily pinpointing. They land you on a topic, but I had to sift through that topic to find an actual answer to this question. That and I'm stupid.)

I own a VW TDI Sportwagen, and am very well versed on VW's scandal. The more I understand it, the more I know why that's not a valid argument for why Toyota might not bring a diesel option to the US. There may be very good reasons (and I've ready about what their chief engineer said about profitability, but that was over a year ago), but the VW scandal in and of itself doesn't seem to be one of them.

    A boy can dream. (sigh.)

And yes, I have test driven the Colorado Diesel (not the Canyon). Was surprisingly impressed with how smooth and "un-truck-like" it drove. Too bad I pretty much liked everything else about the Taco better. My new truck will be my daily driver and good MPGs on the M-F work commute is a real factor for me. I'm a serious weekend warrior, but still just a weekend warrior, so I'm tempted to be excited about my MPGs Mon-Fri. It's nerdy and stupid, but it's something that I like about my TDI. You know, that and the emitting 40x the legal limit of poison. That's fun too.

Right now I'm leaning toward a new or newish Taco Sport or Off-Road and will mod over the following year.
