I like the idea of a diesel, but the GM one isn't exactly setting the world on fire in terms of performance or economy. If you towed a lot then I bet its great, but then the full-size argument comes to light. Maybe off-road rock crawling/creeping the diesel helps, but a gas engine with a good low range can probably do much of the same. Maybe efficiency would be better on the diesel in those conditions? Data isn't often collected by automotive journalists in those types of conditions so we will have to wait until the masses report back on forums. Mentioning journalists...

I had a free copy of Car and Driver where they wrote a nice article about the ZR2 on a historic look at Utah's Moab and the search for uranium many years ago. Anywho, they had this neat graph at the end of the article (full article can also be found online here:http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...l-test-review?dom=fb&mag=cdb&src=socialflowFB) comparing the ZR2 to other heavily off-road based vehicles including the Tacoma:

Wouldn't you know the Tacoma meet or beat the Diesel ZR2 in all categories? Actually, the Tacoma did quite well in most categories. I was shocked at the MPG not being better on the ZR2's behalf. Not worth the cost IMO. Based on results like these Toyota Corp. won't likely go through the hassle of bringing a diesel to the US market.

Tacomas outsells them both so why put a diesel in.

    not likely.

GM and Ford might do it. But with all the shit from VW a lot of companies are afraid to touch diesel now. haven't heard anything more on it now but at one point fiat (dodge eco diesel) was being investigated for the same thing.

I'm pretty surprised GM still does it.
Like it or not electric or hybrid electric will be the way of the future. I think we'd more likely see a hybrid taco before a diesel taco here.

Serious off-roaders replace all those things with aftermarket. Really if you were a serious mall crawler you would get the ZR2

This. Those multimatics wouldn't last 8 hours. Serious off roading? Everything must go. In fact, don't bother bringing the Tacoma. We cant waste time with that, we have to start building a frame asap.

Haha I know what you're saying joeCOVA but all that after market junk is on the mall crawlers too!! Anyway, in the wilds of Canada capability is what matters not looks and you'll find lots of almost stock trucks off road with not much more than a winch. A ZR2 doesn't need much after market, that's the point. It's a different paradigm. Although I'm sure that armour, bumpers, etc can and will be added, but they're just accessories anyway.

Haha I don't work for multimatic but those are state of the art. They make conventional suspensions look pretty primitive.

Just a word of advice... don't expect good MPG in a Tacoma. Seems like mileage is all over the place depending on who and where the person is but I consistently get 17-18 MPG as a daily driver in Atlanta. I also have the DCLB so it has a little more weight. The listed EPA fuel ratings factored into my decision to get a Tacoma vs a full size truck. I was a little disappointed in my mileage for about 3 seconds after realizing I would never hit those ratings but it was easy to accept that and move on. I absolutely love my truck. End of the day you can't beat the reliability and functionality of the Tacoma and if you buy the Canyon or Colorado I guarantee you 5 years from now you may regret it, but you'll never regret buying a Tacoma.

Question is... do you want to go places?

I am shocked to seem something positive about the Tacoma in media....

    Seriously.

I drove to work today and I saw three model-X SUVs on the side of the road being towed. Literally saw three. Granted, I live in the SF bay where there are so many on the road driving every day. The other day I saw two being towed on my way to work. I can't recall seeing so many breakdowns of one particular car in my life.

You'll never hear about this on the media though because Tesla is the "progressive" company. Toyota is gets a lot of unfair bias in the media. GM actually caused more injuries and deaths with acceleration pedal failures, but I never heard about that on the media.

Tacoma comes close to outselling the Colorado, Canyon, and Frontier together...I doubt Toyota is worried about being overtaken in the midsize market any time soon

I wouldn't say the Tundra is killing it. Maybe after they do a update and make it more competitive it might kill it.

Toyota had a diesel 4x4 pickup back in the late 70's early 80's. I assume one reason they wouldn't do it again is many people are looking forward to alternative fuel vehickes, electric, hydrogen or something other than gas or diesel.
