I like the independence 556 ammo. I've shot about 800 rounds of it with no problems. Palmetto state armory has them on sale all the time.

Who has flown with firearms before? Gonna be flying with my carry gun for the first time next month (southwest) and I have the case, I just need to get 2 Non-TSA locks for it and do even more research than I have already done.

check your airline rules but basically double locked hard case. firearm unloaded. you can usually carry a certain amount of ammo in the same case just not in the firearm. you declare it when you check your baggage and depending where you are they sometimes hold your case till you get there or its on the baggage cart at your destination. So I always get to the first part of the conveyor so no one else can take off with your case.

I have flown the past 12 plus years with mine....

The BIGGEST issue I have is with Airlines and TSA not knowing the laws or some anti-gun Airline agent that makes my life hell for 45 minutes...And what Wilcam47 said...

So your block is fully open then. Could be Ammo or your Buffer and Buffee Spring.

if you had issues with the whole box, then it's not likely the Ammo.

Looking at an M1 Garand here in town at a local pawn shop. Wants 1050 for it. Seem like a good price? (being a pawn shop I'm sure I can haggle a little). Anything on these rifles specifically I should look out for? Bore looks good, action is smooth wood has no cracks or major damage that I wouldn't expect to see on a rifle of this age.

No I understand that it's the only ammo you've had issues with.

A lot of companies load their .223 slightly differently. You could have had a bad batch with some inconsistent brass. But by what you've described, it sounds like an issue of too heavy of a buffer and buffer spring due to the load being slightly less powered. Or it could be your extractor in your bolt due to the brass being inconsistent.

Your bolt should open the last round, regardless of what Ammo you use. I'd keep an eye on that in the future.

Don't you have to be a part of the CMP to get one? How easy is it to join? I didn't think to look who made it.

Price ranges for Garands is really a hard thing to determine. Its all about condition, year made, who made it, bore, and lots of other stuff. Plus Garands have sort of gone up in value in recent years due to the supply drying up a bit. I picked up two "service grade" ones a few years ago from the CMP that arent even available as an option anymore.

Basically you would really need to get pictures of the rifles, the manufacture (HRA, Sprinfield, Ect), and year it was made to get a "value" of the rifle. $1050 doesnt sound out of line...but again without any other info cant say that for sure lol.

When i bought mine you didnt really have to join the CMP. You had to "prove" to them a few things though. I remember having to join a club (garand collectors club?) and be a member of an affiliated group (my range counted) then just prove US citizenship (birth certificate). Think it cost me an extra 40 bucks and I got a quarterly magazine out of it

I'll try and grab some pics and more info. Manufacturer should he printed on the receiver correct? Guy selling wasn't sure if year. It seems most of these old milsurp rifles have the year printed on them somewhere too.

Yes the manufacturer will be on the receiver right next to the serial number. I don't think the date will be posted but just Google m1 Garand serial number dating and you'll find charts that show approximant dates.

As was mentioned, condition and manufacturer play into the price. 99% of the rifles have been armory rebuilt once or twice in their lifetime, so the serial numbers of all the components will not match. Sometimes the manufacturers don't either. It is not a big deal since most are like that, but if you happen to find one with all numbers matching, the value will be higher.

When I got mine, I had to join a CMP affiliated club. In my case, the GSSA (Georgia Sport Shooting Association, the NRA state affiliate) was sufficient. I also had to shoot in a match. The idea was to introduce more people to match shooting.

It must have worked - I am still competitively shooting!

M1s are great rifles - just watch where your thumb is when you put in a new clip (yes, "clip" not "magazine")
