It's less Tacoma and more mod
Probably what happened, washed out your grease in a water crossing or mud pit (mud has the bonus of grit which wears seals out). Unfortunately bearings are sealed on the fronts so no regreasing yourself.

Well now I wish I had the damn cap for the thing since I tend to drive down dusty roads requently and have to constantly change filters because of this "mod"

I never did it for the "performance". I prefer intake sound at 3k over an exhaust drone. Added a K&N filter, I expect it makes me a solid 69 hp :crapstorm: It's the equivalent of one of the spinny helicopter hats :plane:

lol so I'd get fired quick as an exhaust parts shipper - I actually measured this time and picked them up to get a more accurate estimate. 25 lb, 25x12x8 is $45 via FedEx.

Just order a new deckplate from Amazon, they're under 10 bucks and it's way cheaper than getting a new box!

    What causes this?

Not to be too technical, but my first thought is maybe your wheels are a bit too sticky-outy.

Probably not. I've "heard" problems can arise with bearings if you have too little backspace. Like guys that get a little too enthusiastic about having their wheels stick out and throw 3" spacers behind their rims.

Same here. After awhile, I've just been leaving the cap on. I was changing an air filter once a month. No thank you! Every time I take it off, the filter just gets filled with all kinds of stuff. Doesn't even have to be on a dusty road.
