    some stuff
When the tranny is in neutral, the linkage is loose, and will flop around when going over speed bumps and crap. Keep it in gear if you can't handle the noise. FYI, you never put it in neutral when wheeling so get used to gearing it.

What's the point of brakes then.

Man. Has none of these people ever drove a manual truck with a long throw before? It's gonna clang. It's gonna rattle. Mine does it and sounds like all the other manual transmission trucks I have had before. The word for the day is "inherent."

I think the clank noise gives the truck character. It reminds me that I am driving a machine with weight and it has purpose. This is a truck not a small sports car.

We all know what brakes are for, that's not the point. Being situationally aware and in full control of your truck/car/bike requires braking, acceleration and steering. By popping it into neutral at 40mph and coasting to a stop with your foot on the brake you are giving up instantaneous access to 1 of your 3 controlling factors. Yes of course you could grab a gear in a panic and quickly accelerate should the need arise but that takes time, and you'd better make sure you pick the right gear based on the speed you have "neutral coasted" down to. With thirty years of spirited driving and riding I will tell you a time will come when you will need all three options to get out of trouble, if your right foot is not connected to your tires you may get caught with your "pants down". Neutral coasting to a stop is just a lazy driving bad habit that many people do.

I thought you meant using just the tranny to slow you down.

Both. If you've down shifted and your foot is off the gas you're using the engine and the brakes to slow the truck, the truck is in gear until the last second or so before you push in the clutch and come to a full stop. Take note of what you hear next time you see a dump truck or semi coming downhill to a stop....downshift,downshift,downshift,stop.

I personally love all the gear noise of my truck. Makes me appreciate the mechanical aspect of shifting gears. Any manual v6 tacoma I have been in has been the same way. Including second gens. When there is no load on the driveline things will rattle around a bit, totally normal.

So, all this clanking being “normal” for the truck — just means it was designed poorly. I’ve driven many stick shifts, and none have been so noisy nor cantakerous & balky as this shitty Tacoma. Just because its a truck doesn’t excuse it from NVH engineering. My 91 silverado stick performed better/ was quieter, and thats saying something. And my friends second gen M/T doesn’t do it. So, dafuq?

Reasonably we could say the diff whine is “normal” too, since it seems to plague so many of ours. Doesn’t mean it’s right.

I thought i was supposed to love a new car? 500 miles on this truck, and pretty dissapointed in the quality - or lack there of

Mine does it too. Comes from around the bellhousing area and sounds like hitting 2 cooking pans together. Only when not in gear. It has done it since new.

The same resonant frequency can be heard when I lug the truck in 1st. I think its something in the clutch. It reminds my of race cars with noisy multi plate clutches. Not worrried.
