Just installed cold air intake (Dry)

First of all, i did not install the CAI looking for a boost in horsepower.
I was motivated by 2 primary goals;
1.) Gain back at least 1 mpg I've lost as a result of getting 265/75r16 Load E tires.
2.) Allow the truck to make the sweet aggressive sound of sucking in air and grunting at higher rpm's.

Since I just installed this a few hours ago, I have yet to see if #1 will be accomplished, but #2 has definitely been met.

After weeks of research, I was able to find one that satisfied me in terms of user reviews and a good price point.
I initially thought about getting afe's dry intake, but couldn't justify spending over 400 dollars on this type of mod. So after further research, I've decided on S&B's dry cold air intake.

I chose this because;
-$299
-decent user reviews
-looks great under the hood
-wanted a boxed filter due to frequent off roading
--sounds amazing

I will be pairing this up with a Magnaflow catback exhaust soon, but this put a huge smile on my face as I listened to the gradually increasing deep throaty grunt while accelerating on the freeway.

And now for some comparison pics (pardon the dirty engine bay. I know some of you guys are hyper judgmental, but oh well).

I will report back and update the thread once I calculate the mpg off of a full tank. If mpg's do improve, I will do nothing but highly recommend this!







EDIT:
Here are a couple of clips with the cabin sound on acceleration. This is with ECT on.
Also, after listening to the clips and comparing them in real life, the sound on the videos are not entirely accurate. Due to the low-end mic on the smartphone, the sound is more subdued. Listening to them with headphones on would help, but in person, the noise is much louder, FYI.



2nd edit:
Update; ran 2 full tanks of 87 octane (10% ethanol) after install.
1st tank mpg improvement was .5 mpg.
2nd tank was 1.5 mpg improvement (note; 2nd tank included more than normal highway driving. I drove about 120 more miles on the highway than typical due to a small road trip to the coast)

Update; MBRP cat back exhaust to be installed . Hoping for mpg improvement.

That's what I read about them. even the packaging of the product was top notch!

It was weird at first for a few miles, because the car would jerk a little bit or hesitate to accelerate. I think it may have been because i had the battery unplugged for about an hour during the install and the computer is figuring out the new system, but after a little drive, the throttle response in both ECT and non-ect mode has been much better.

Another strange thing to note: in ECT mode, the engine held higher rpms longer. not sure if that's temporary

 

Go for the Magnaflow Cat-Back as soon as you can! It's worth every penny.

 

Looks really nice, and I bet it's healthier for the engine to get that boost of clean air instead of the strain from that grid filter. Quick question if you don't mind. A friend of mine is a WRX enthusiast and he told me to get a tune if I ever mess with the intake. Are you going to get a tune, or wait for the catback? Do you know if what he said is even valid?

Just put an S&B on my ford (went with the dry filter as well). Great quality and great fit. Really happy with the purchase.

 

WRX owners are a special type of grenade owners. Since it's a turbo motor, they benefit from 10+ WHP from simple mods such as intake and exhaust. However, they are known for being shit for reliable untunned. People were blowing up motors just by switching out their down pipes and running untuned. They require tuning with products such as cobb accessport. NA or naturally aspirated motors do not respond well to mods. That is why everyone calls an intake snake oil. With a tune, youre only going to get 1-3 hp realistically and this may cost 600+ dollars at least. Don't waste your time listening to your friend about necessarily needing a tune. Tuning for our cars is also in its infancy stage, give it a couple of months for companies like OVtune to really fix everything.

Hey Kevin. I actually have a friend with a WRX as well who got his chip tuned! He sent it to some guy via mail and had it tuned then sent back to him, which i thought was crazy.
But to answer your question, I'm not an expert on this, but based on my research, it is not necessary if you have a cai made for the specific vehicle. From what i understand, a tune will improve 3 characteristics; gas mileage, throttle response, and "performance".
But that is based on my limited knowledge .
With that said, i will evetually tune after installing the cat back exhaust.

It sounds like nothing i heard on any youtube videos of the intake .
The best way i can describe it is that at 4000 rpm, it sounds like the noise this truck's engine makes when you almost redline, except it's 4 times louder and a little deeper .

Yeah that makes complete sense. @Ez2Tan echoed basically the same thing. Would love to hear a vid of what it sounds like, though it probably wouldn't do it justice..

I meant that the car did not even shift like how it did in ECT mode before the cai.
I was on the freeway testing it out, and it held on to 3rd gear at over 5-6000 rpms for a lot longer than usual lol

 

Huh thats pretty crazy. Might just need to do the trans adapt time for a few hundred miles again.
