Denso Spark Plug

Alright guys it's time to change the spark plugs in my v6 double cab and just wanted to ask a quick question. I have read that Denso does the best for the 4.0 v6 and I was just wondering which out of these is the best to get? Gonna pick them up Friday morning and knock it out Saturday or Sunday. Please don't post any links to other threads, just please give a straight forward answer and we will go about our days. If you have a better suggestion then Denso, go ahead and throw that out there. SK20HR11's if you want long life - 100K+ miles. Personally, I think any plug will do; just get what the manufacturer recommends. The Denso long life's have platinum tip electrodes which will reduce electrode erosion. When I took out my NGK Iridiums with 80K, I had gaps ranging from .050 to .060. I cleaned and regappd them and they are running well with 90K, but platinum tips would have prevented the large gaps due to erosion.

 

Thanks for the info. I know iridiums are good plugs, but I've read mixed reviews regarding iridium and our v6 Tacoma's, so I had already decided before posting that I wasn't going to get iridium. I don't mind going with a cheaper plug that may have to be changed sooner, as long as it's still a good plug when it is in use. So i guess mainly just looking for insight before breaking the bank buying really expensive plugs, when I don't absolutely have/need to.

 

Another option. Rig runs great on them. OTC at AutoZone.

 

Of course doing it myself saves already, but trying to save as much as I possibly can lol

 

How much do these run per plug price wise? And I've read to gap between .040-.043. Am I correct? And where would be the best suggestion on more of an exact number

I have the Denso Long Lifes sitting on my bench ready to install when my NGK's hit 100K. I have no qualms putting Iridiums in my V6. Most complaints can be dismissed as anecdotal. The manufacturers would not list their plugs for a given engine if they hadn't tested them.

 

I understand that, normally I will dismiss one or two accounts of something not working properly because, of course, assumed at that low of a number, may just be an installation error by the vehicle owner. But I've actually seem quite a few more than just 1 or 2 problem claiming that iridium did not do well in their v6, so therefore that would lead anyone to believe that there's more than just installation error behind it, so I'm just gonna play it for safe piece of mind and not get iridium. I'm very queer when it comes to my truck, so I'm just gonna opt out of considering iridium. Not bashing what you use, to each their own, just what I'm gonna do.

 

Come to the dark side - we have cookies! Not feeling bashed ... BTW, I have Iridiums in all my Toyota products, except, maybe, the Sienna. My bro did the plugs last and I don't recall what he put in it.

 

That's good, I'm glad iridiums have been successful for your Toyota vehicles. But I will never know if they will be successful in my 2 Toyotas, because I won't be using them.

@Plain Jane Taco how much do those plugs you posted run a piece? And what should those particular ones be gapped at?

 

I don't remember what I paid. Maybe $5 a piece. When I checked the gaps they were where they needed to be. I'd have to go check the manual......but I want to say around 040.

Just go to your dealer (ugh!) and tell the parts manager you need 6 spark plugs. He will most likely give you Denso, will cost you les than $30...no need to overthink it.

I laugh when guys take the time to pull their plugs out, re-gap them and then re-install the old ones. If I'm going to that much trouble, I'm just going to buy new ones.

I would recommend NOT "just going to the dealership and asking for 6 spark plugs." The last two times I've done that with oil filters they've handed me the wrong filter (for the 3rd gen v6) and I've had to correct them. In my eyes, you should go in with a part number to cross reference anything they give you, because they really don't care if you get home and realize you've wasted your time and money by driving there and are now trying to install the wrong parts (or worse- manage to successfully install the wrong parts)

Edit just because: about two months ago I replaced the FACTORY (3 denso, 3 NGK) plugs on a friends "new to him" truck- a 2007 v6 4x4 with more than 280k miles. All 6 had a gap of .08-.09. Needless to say, I recommended he start swapping out every other maintenance item, regardless of what the dealership had claimed the maintenance history looked like. I was amazed they weren't (overly) seized, and came out fairly easily

 

Tyler, I make sure that the new plug I put in matches the plug I take out, it's not rocket science. I've changed my plugs 3 times...

 

I hear ya man, wasn't trying to single you out- just giving my experience... I know a lot of guys don't live right down the road from their dealer, and also the truck may be their only means of transportation...

I'd HATE to get all the way to the point of having one plug out to compare them just to realize I was given the wrong plugs.

Then you have to reinstall the one old plug (assuming you don't have another car), drive back to the dealer and swap them out... And that's assuming you aren't doing the change during a time when the dealer isn't closed and being completely SOL.

As I said, I just prefer to have a part number right there on my phone to cross reference anything they give me before leaving

I express lots of appreciation to those of you who have taken the time to actually give me information regarding the questions I had, instead of just posting a link or telling me that other information I have found was incorrect because your expierence was different then others or people trying to tell me what has worked in vehicles that aren't Tacoma
